Worst Bank EVER!!! Direct deposit to my account. From time to time they freeze my debit card, flag fake fraud alerts, I spend hours on the phone answering the same old stupid questions time after time for hours, no notes to their colleagues, no fix, only fake apologies and excuses every time, PenFed was great when I first got them but now, worse than any other bank at holding your money hostage making you prove it's yours, repeatedly freezing accounts & making you verify the same old info over & over with ZERO PEOPLE SKILLS!!! PEN FED SUCKS!!! CHANGED MY DIRECT DEPOSIT

We started our refinance application on November 30, 2020. It is now February 26, 2021 which is 4 weeks since our appraisal was completed. There has been NO communication from our mortgage refinance processor since January 7, 2021. I even emailed Winston Wilkinson (EVP/President Mortgage) about our experience and all I got was his representative from Home Loans Members Relations calling me back with excuses. Needless to say, we are extremely dissatisfied. Tomorrow we will be going to BB&T to start an application with them (we’ve done 4 loans with them in the past without any issues). Frankly, this was our first mortgage application with PenFed and of course will be our last. The 1 star is for the opportunity to submit the application (the people working in the mortgage department deserve better leadership and are not at fault).

Honestly I thought PenFed was a decent bank. I looked through the reviews and noticed a lot of 1 Stars for Mortgage Refinance. The rates were great and I was doing a VA IRRL, simple process that I believed would not take long or be too difficult of a process. Well here I am going on almost 60 days with no communication from my Loan Processing Rep, all I get are emails about applying for their other services. Calling PenFed is useless as you get sent around in circles with no one having answers on a status update. Granted they did tell me 60-90 days but can I at least find out where I am in the process? Was I approved? I made a HUGE mistake in search of that lower rate. At this point I'd rather stay with my current rate than deal with this bank. Please PenFed tell me how to cancel this application. I'm DONE. Everyone just STAY AWAY!

@PenFed Thank you for the help. I did receive an email back saying that my application was taking longer than expected. Great at least I received some feedback. I am calling this morning to cancel the application and I have been transferred 5 times on one called. It goes from General Customer Service, to the Mortgage Department, back to Customer Service and then back to the Mortgage Department. This is UNSAT. Please fix this for future customers.

Personally I’ve been a member of been of PenFed for several years. In November 2020, my wife and I decided to refinance our home and that turned into be the greatest nightmare we’ve ever experienced in the past seven or eight homes that we’ve bought and sold during the past 15 years. For months I’ve been trying to communicate with them —totally non-responsive regarding updating us on the loan application. I finally had to file a claim with the consumer financial protection board in order to get my so-called mortgage loan officer to get respond to one of the many email messages I’ve been sending them constantly. I am still waiting to get responses and their convoluted customer service phone number is even more frustrating than trying to reach a real human being to respond with a simple reasonable question: can someone update us on our loan application. Never again will I deal with this company

If you ever called PenFed, the first thing you notice is that you are on hold for at least 30 min before you talk to anyone, what a great start, try it for yourself, not recommended :))
PenFed Gap Insurance for auto loans is scam and they rob you with it, they charge you $450 for it and they do not tell you that after 60 days there is no refund if you decide to cancel it, it is a great way for them to make money. I never seen this anywhere else, usually you can cancel your gap or warranty and if you decide to cancel your policy they will give you prorated refund but PenFed does not allow you to do that and they do not even tell you that you can not get refund when you sign up for it. That is wrong, even if this is your policy at least let people know about it. When I called to cancel it and told them I did not know about it they said it is in you paperwork that you signed??
Not sure where they train their customer service people?? After all that she asked me, would you like to still cancel it? I was like why would I cancel it if I am not getting anything back?? Its very clear its another way for them to rob people.
NOT RIGHT, I AM LEAVING THIS REVIEW SO PEOPLE MAKE MY MISTAKE.

Hi Alex, our GAP protection is generally priced below similar policies you may find at an auto dealership. Our GAP disclosure does indicate that a refund is only available up until 60 days after origination. You can find a copy of the disclosure on https://www.penfed.org/auto/guaranteed-asset-protection. Additionally, if you contact a Member Service Representative, we can send you a copy of your specific agreement, if applicable.

Yes. Anyone can join PenFed. PenFed membership is free for everyone now, but PenFed was originally created to serve U.S. military members and veterans of all branches, as well as federal employees and retirees. PenFed formerly required non-government and non-military applicants to donate to a military charity to be eligible for membership, but they no longer require this. As long as you're a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the United States, you can join Pentagon Federal Credit Union by simply funding a savings account with at least $5.
All you have to do to apply for PenFed membership is enter your personal information – including your name, address, Social Security number or ITIN, and other info – on the membership form. Before you submit your application for membership, you'll be asked to make a deposit of at least $5 to a new PenFed savings account using a debit card or a bank transfer.
PenFed Membership Eligibility Requirements:
Must be able to fund a savings account with at least $5
Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent U.S. resident
Must have a government-issued photo I.D.
Must be at least 18 years old
All in all, it's very easy to become a PenFed Credit Union member. To fill out a membership form, visit the PenFed Credit Union website. Alternately, you can apply for membership over the phone by calling 800-247-5626.
PenFed Credit Union scores fairly well among WalletHub users with an average rating of 3.6 (out of a possible 5). PenFed credit cards get solid ratings from WalletHub's editors, too, led by the Platinum Rewards Visa with an editors' rating of 4.5 / 5, followed by the Power Cash Rewards card at 4.4 / 5 and the Gold Visa at 3.3 / 5. Pentagon Federal Credit Union enjoys an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, as well.
There is no PenFed secured credit card. Pentagon Federal Credit Union has offered secured credit cards in the past, but they stopped taking new secured card applications in 2019.
PenFed only offers unsecured credit cards for members with above-average credit. There's no security deposit required, but potential customers with credit scores below 700 may find it difficult to get approved.
Although PenFed does not have a secured credit card, there are plenty of good alternatives. Navy Federal Credit Union, for example, offers the nRewards Secured card for members with bad or no credit. It gives 1 point per $1 spent and comes with a $0 annual fee. A fully-refundable deposit of at least $200 is required. Other good secured credit cards include Wells Fargo Secured, Bank of America Cash Rewards Secured, and Discover it Secured.
Most PenFed credit cards require an excellent credit score (750+) for approval. A few are also designed for people with good credit (700-749). Please find a full list of cards on our PenFed credit card page.
