I wish there was a zero stars! They are absolutely terrible! We spent months getting to process a student loan. They kept requesting inaccurate proof. After about 5 months of going back and forth, we were able to flush the process. But we thought we finally were done with terrible service.. oh how naive... the first month we were charged the wrong payment amount, TWICE! I cannot wait for this loan to be paid! They absolutely suck! I have never had such an experience with any bank, let alone a credit union! ESL rocks! I only wish they had different loans, I wouldn't have used Sefcu for sure!

I applied for a car loan, and I own my home outright. The officer said he was unable to give me the lowest interest rate because I show no mortgage payment in my credit history. When I pointed out that I own my home outright, he put a $660 "mortgage payment" on the disclosure and said that was the only way he would approve the loan. I've been a member of SEFCU since 1983 and have a 700+ credit rating. When I applied for a personal loan to close out a credit card, another loan officer said that they couldn't establish any kind of real estate transaction history for me and would not give me the full amount of the loan I requested, even after I, ONCE AGAIN, explained that I've owned my home outright since 2003. Makes zero sense. This place used to be really awesome, but even the phone customer service is a minimum 37-minute wait for a representative now. I'm looking to bank elsewhere.
Horrible experience so far trying to get an auto advantage loan. Confusing. Dealing with multiple people. They are not clear on the specifics. (i.e. sending you and email saying you are approved for "x" amount. When you go to use it, saying it was not a "final" approval. Then the payment calculation in higher than their calculator. (even when you use a VIN # and you supposed approval amount. Also, called and left a message for car buying service. Radio silence! It's hard to get through and the message they ask you to leave was ignored. Called a week ago! AWFUL all the way around.
This bank is the absolute worst. I have 3 different banks and this is the only bank I have to call or visit a branch frequently to resolve basic issues with my checking and savings account. Had to go to 3 different beaches even to withdraw money from my account because they did not have enough funds on hand to accommodate my request, which is just obscene.
Good interest rate but their website is confusing. I switched banks for scheduled payments and the website let me but they kept taking payments from both! Apparently you need to read the fine print when you first set up scheduled payment and ignore that they let you cancel scheduled payments on the site. They asked for a form to be filled out to actually cancel payments (I did not see any requests to do so when I switched accounts on the site). This caused me to incur fees from the first bank I was using to make payments, they didn’t care.

In 2012 I secured three loans with SEFCU. Two personal loans and a car loan. Three years later I lost my job and although I was able to keep paying the car payment and one of the loans I became behind on one of the personal loans. SEFCU took the payments from my savings account for two months but on the 3rd month I was $12.64 cents short. So SEFCU REPOSSESSED MY CAR with ZERO notice other than a vague collection notice that never once stated they would repossess the car. They stated a tiny clause in the paperwork that states if another loan goes into default they can take the car as collateral. It doesn't say that on the car loan paperwork but in the fine print (and legally worded) personal loan. It was a nightmare! I got the car back within hours but I was still charged a fee of $650 (more than the original personal loan!) and they reported the repossession to all three credit bureaus. After numerous calls and letters to branches, corporate offices and Presidents I was told "too bad....we can't help you". It was unbelievable! I've been paying for that $12.64 shortage for 6 years now...another year to go. My credit was shot with the repo on the record. STAY CLEAR OF SEFCU AT ALL COSTS!!
The Sefcu crew was an amazing group of people. The process was painless and simple. I would recommend everyon i know. Even after a few years everone still is amazing. Thank you!
