I am not personally a fan of credit unions over mainstream banking corporations. There are pros to using such a service, but personally I've only had difficulties; especially with Apple Federal Credit Union. My worst experience with them would have to be a few years back. I had transferred a large sum of money into an account I opened with Apple Federal. After a week or so of keeping said money within their account, I attempt to withdraw a percentage. In doing so, I find that not only have I been denied my withdrawal but that my entire deposit is missing! I called the credit union, and spoke with a most unpleasant woman. The female representative was rude, information-less, and an overall displeasure to speak with, not to mention an extreme lack of help regarding my situation. After many e-mails with my branch's manager, and Apple Federal's headquarters, I was able to have my money returned to me--but not without serious effort and headache. My advice? Don't bother with this credit union-save yourself the hassle and go somewhere more reliable.
When I applied for an account online, I did an online transfer from my old bank to start the account at Apple. However, when I submitted the online form for an account, you needed to transfer money to Apple to start the account. When I brought the signed application in to the branch to complete the process, I was told I needed money right then to open the account. This was not stated online. Not much of a problem then. I went to the ATM and got money out. However the next day, I was hit with a NSF from my old bank as Apple took the money out I told it to when I did the online application to start the account. I was told at the branch that the online transaction wouldn't go through since I didn't have an account at the time. I found myself wanting to close my account as their policies for opening an account weren't clear at all. That or I had an awful banker at the local branch.
