This review is specifically for my experiences with a Savings account from First Hawaiian Bank (FHB). Everything about my experiences are positive except for one instance; I had trouble closing my Savings account in the past. But the details aren't so bad that I'd give FHB a low rating. It's still a 4.9999 / 5 star bank with 5-stars in most categories. The only negative: One year, I had less than $300 in my Savings -if below $300, then I get charged a service fee of $4.50/month. Acceptable and totally fair, but I didn't like losing money each month, so I called up FHB. They said I'd need to go to the bank in person to close my account, but not until the beginning of the next month. Unfortunately, the day I called was like the 2nd day of the month, so I had to wait a long time to make my next move. That also meant I'd get charged another $4.50 fee. At the beginning of the next month I went to the bank as instructed. There, the teller said there had been a policy change: all requests to close Savings accounts must be initialized 6 months in advance. I wasn't told about that on the phone. Turns out, the new policy "had just become active." If I were to abide by that policy, then I'd be giving FHB the right to prob me for another 6 months -up to $27 more in service fees ($4.50 x 6 mo). Luckily the teller was understanding of my situation and overrode the policy; she let me close my account right then and there. So again, 5-stars for customer service. A little less rating for policies and clarity, but that was back then, in 2007. I've had no problems since then!
I've only had a First Hawaiian Bank account for about 6 years (ever since I moved away from home). There are a few issues that I have with First Hawaiian, most of their locations aren't open as long as other banks that I have reviewed. They don't have in-store branches which does limit the availability of First Hawaiian. I believe their hours are around regular work hours too (9-6 maybe?). They do have one very redeeming quality though. Their ATMs are at all the 7-11's throughout Hawaii. This is huge, especially since I live near a few of them so depending on which direction I'm going I can withdraw what I need for the day. Their staff is pretty friendly and knowledgeable regarding their products and I can't say that I have had any real issues with the savings account that I have there. Their rates are rather noncompetitive but what do you expect coming from prime rates that are at 0%.
In the event that in a given week, for this product, there were multiple applicable rates in our database based on different criteria, the above graph reflects the lowest interest rate recorded. Before submitting an application, always verify with the issuing institution (i.e. bank, credit union, other lender) the rates, fees, and all terms and conditions accompanying the application.
