Do you need insurance for Getaround?
No, you do not need insurance for Getaround. If you rent a car with Getaround in most states, the company automatically provides at least $50,000 in bodily injury liability coverage per person ($100,000 per accident), $30,000 in property damage liability coverage, and any other coverage required by state laws. The major exception is New York, where Getaround drivers are insured up to the state's minimum insurance requirements by a commercial policy maintained by the host (the car owner).
Getaround also provides collision and comprehensive insurance on vehicles rented through the company. However, you may be charged a fee of up to $3,000 for damage to the vehicle during the trip. Drivers have the option to purchase an additional protection plan from Getaround to reduce or eliminate this fee.
It's important to note that the liability, comprehensive, and collision insurance provided to Getaround drivers is secondary coverage. In other words, it only applies after you file a claim with any other coverage that fits the situation, such as a personal car insurance policy or a non-owner policy.
Insurance for Getaround Hosts
Getaround provides primary insurance coverage for hosts, which means that hosts can file a claim with Getaround immediately rather than attempting to go through their personal car insurance policy first. The company provides up to $1 million in single-limit liability coverage for hosts, plus collision and comprehensive.
