It all began with a few teachers and a dream. Back in 1939, eight Minneapolis teachers decided to take control of their own financial security. They formed the Minneapolis Federation of Teachers Credit Union. Over the years the credit union has endured name changes, added field of memberships and expanded across the Midwest. In 2020 a merger with Firefly Credit Union – Minnesota’s first financial cooperative – made TruStone Financial Credit Union the second-largest credit union in the state. But your goals have always been their priority, and they exist to help you reach them.

Before leaving the country, I turned my bank card off through the Freestone Financial app. While I was away, eight transactions totaling $140 still went through, resulting in $280 in overdraft fees and leaving my account at -$320. I had no internet access while traveling and was unaware of these charges until I returned.
When I contacted customer service, I received conflicting information. One representative told me that recurring transactions would still go through even if the card was turned off. A supervisor later told me the opposite—that no transactions should go through if the card is off, unless a routing and account number is used.
I was told they would verify whether my card was on or off at the time of the transactions, but after multiple callbacks, I was finally told that my card was only turned off after the last transaction. This does not align with my actions, as I know I turned the card off before leaving the country.
Overall, the lack of clarity, inconsistent information, and failure to provide concrete evidence made this experience extremely frustrating and a waste of time.

They make you jump through hoops to get a higher interest rate. So you complete all the steps they tell you to (open a credit card, maintain a balance, have 12 transactions per month), and you still don't receive your higher interest earnings. Why? Oh, the person opening your account failed to mention that you ALSO need a debit card! This is the norm with this credit union. Stand on your head, take three sips of water, touch your nose. Oh no, you forgot to close your eyes!

I wish there were no stars to give. They did not support me in the scam transaction dispute. They sent me a denial letter immediately when I called and filed the dispute. They asked me to send the supporting documents. I sent them right away on the same day, but they had already sent a letter on the same day stating that pertinent information needed to be provided without even waiting. There was the runaround and there is no way to know who is handling this. I have used Capital One credit card, and they handle this type of dispute efficiently and correctly. I will not be using TruStone credit card.

Avoid this particular credit union at all costs. The worst banking experience ever. The people who work there like to give you the runaround. I applied for membership nearly four weeks ago. Three weeks from the date of application, I was told via email that I would have to visit a branch to complete the application process. Once I did, I was told that I would have to provide tax statements and pay stubs. I made an appointment to do this four days later. The next day (less than twenty-four hours after visiting the branch), I received an email from the branch stating that my membership application was declined and that I would have to wait for a letter with additional information. It seems like dealing with this particular credit union is nothing but trouble and is not recommended. Save yourself some time and hassles by visiting a credit union that communicates with applicants and members, that is fair to all persons, that is willing to serve you, and that makes you feel welcome.

If you value your money, please do not use this credit union. They will never have your back. Unfortunately, they purchased my beloved credit union, and it's been nothing but headaches with them since. I was scammed out of money, and PayPal told me to ask them to send it back as a dispute, and they would make sure that my money was returned, but they refuse to do so.
I called repeatedly and even spoke directly to the Vice President of Operations, Kendall Swenson, and she still won't do anything to fix the problem.
I finally filed complaints with both the Attorney General's office and the Better Business Bureau, and I'm getting ready to file one with another entity. Please do not use this credit union. They are awful.
They should be protecting you and your finances—not making you work so hard to try to get your money back.

Due to an inexperienced teller at the Minneapolis NE branch, a mistake was made which has tied up a $13,000 check for a week or more in my account. Despite all efforts and promises made—a lot of legwork on my part—all has failed. They admitted to the mistake but didn't seem to care to fix the problem, hiding behind policy. These people are as bad as banks. They make all the mistakes in the world and don't care about the lives they disrupt and the damage they willfully create. Consider going to another credit union or using a non-banking tool altogether.

If you are looking for a high yield checking account, this is the place! As of October 2023 it is 3.93% on the first $20,000. It does not require any direct deposit. Only 12 credit card or debit card transactions per month. Signature credit card has 1.5% cash back rewards. In my experience, all the disputes I have had with any transaction have been decided in my favor. They now have 24/7 customer service and many other perks. Check out their website. Best place I have ever banked!

When I initially began banking with TruStone Financial Credit Union, it was before it underwent a merger in 2020-2021 and was known as Firefly Credit Union. Before the merger, I had purchased a new car with a loan from Firefly, and couldn’t have complained about anything at all until what I would call a very bumpy and unnecessarily difficult transition into TruStone.
After 5 years of always on time payments on the loan, I paid it off in July 2023 - but I never received the lien release paperwork in the mail. When it was almost September, I tried contacting the credit union and inquired about the lien release, which I was informed had allegedly been sent, to the correct address on file, on July 14, 2023. I was informed that in order to have a “replacement” release form mailed to me I would need to pay a $20 fee, or travel to a branch location (the nearest being an hour drive away now) to plead with a branch manager to waive the fee. It would be much easier to pay the nonsense fee for a document I’ve already paid around $20k for and be done with it, but to me this is unacceptably unfair and unprincipled behavior from an institution I am supposed to trust with my financial livelihood. After making the trip to a branch location, I was told they didn’t have authority over the fee, but that they would get in contact with someone who does and call me back. 4 days later I was called and told they were unwilling to waive the fee, and they couldn’t provide actual proof that they had ever sent one to my address at all besides referencing a “note in the system” saying it was sent.
I am owed a lien release - the *first* one and not a “replacement” for one I did not receive due to no fault of my own- for my rightfully owned property without this petty shakedown justified by their own incompetence.

We were with TruStone Credit Union even before it became Firefly and then became TruStone. We have had checking, personal loans, and 4 or 5 different car loans paid off. My husband and I had recently discussed with each other opening a HELOC for home improvements in early January, 2024. But, when we discussed this, we had not yet had to deal with TruStone on a personal level. Then we recently sold our last vehicle, the dealership paid it off, and we were due an equity check for the sale, we found out what they have defended into.
I am not going to get into semantics on their horse and buggy, self made procedures, but do know, they were not made with even a moecule of consideration for members!!! What I will be reviewing is the disconnect between TruStone Credit Union and its members. Many of those members remember what it use to feel like to walk into their doors and feel taken care of, heard, respected and understood. With TruStone those traits no longer exist. They do not exist nor are in their business model. TruStone has ruined the brand that got them where they are today. Customer care is a distant memory for members and comes across as a nonsensical request to their blind eyes and deaf ears!!!
This is now. This is a new climate. TruStone as a whole is dismissive, unknowledgeable, red tape entrenched, slow moving, depersonalizing, and the puppetmasters of gridlock. You are an account number to TruStone, and they are a paycheck and nothing more to their employees from top to bottom.
I have two neighbors in Fridley who shared their thoughts with me a couple of months ago and they they shared they and their family members left for the same reason. I hadn't encountered it til now because I didn't have to face to face or ear to ear with them until now. My neighbors were not wrong!!!
We will never do business with them again. I am just glad we had the foresight to hold our business checking, other savings, CDs and Grandchildrens' savings accounts with another bank because we had considered moving them when they were Firefly and still operated professionally and effectively for their members. I do not usually make reviews, but this one is so necessary because I so not want others to fall victim to their incompetence and corporate quicksand. I cannot stress enough, DO NOT BANK THERE!!! YOU WILL REGRET IT!!! I only wish I could have given them zero stars, but I had to select one in order to post this review!

This was a great Credit Union when it was US Federal and Firefly. The merger with Trustone Financial absolutely DESTROYED it. We had personal savings, checking, car loans, mortgages, plus business accounts there. With Trustone their loan rates are no better than a bank, often higher, their systems are slower and more difficult to deal with, and they have instituted policies that are just not customer friendly. We gave them a year plus to get it together but finally gave up and moved all of our personal and business accounts elsewhere.

the most incompetent people you will ever work with. Please stay away from this credit union. The only reason why we are there is because our loan was transferred as our credit union was bought out by them. I will never ever do business with these people neither should you.

The review concerns the Lyndale Avenue South branch. I can't speak about other branches. Very incompetent tellers. They can't spell or do math. It's very obvious this branch is all into the DEI thing and doesn't require more stringent hiring practices. I suspect the entire credit union, however, runs in this manner. I never have a problem opening bank accounts. I won't be with this outfit much longer.

I started with US Federal Employees Credit Union in 1985. I enjoyed great service until they were acquired by TruStone Financial. Customer service is next to impossible to contact, they are unresponsive. And if you do make contact, they are condescending and rude, quick to blame you for the problem instead of finding a solution. I've had regular ACH withdrawals for various bills. One time they'll work, the next time rejected even though there is more than enough money in the account to cover the charge, they post it as NSF. It happened again today for an insurance payment that has been coming out of the same account since 2013. The last time this happened, the customer service rep said it was my fault and never did correct the problem. Changing financial institutions is a major undertaking, especially with lots of automatic deposits and withdrawals. But after 38 years, that is now my objective. I would recommend everyone to avoid any undertaking with this institution.
