Do you need special insurance to drive for Uber?
Yes, you need special insurance to drive for Uber. Most insurers require you to purchase additional coverage if you drive for a rideshare service, and if you do not tell your car insurance company about driving for Uber, they may cancel your policy and deny your claims.
You will need to have a special rideshare endorsement or a commercial auto policy to get coverage while you're driving for Uber. You also need to have collision and comprehensive insurance on your personal policy, along with PIP or MedPay, if you want the rideshare endorsement to cover damage to your vehicle and your accident-related injuries. You need at least the minimum insurance coverage required by your state, too.
Rideshare insurance is generally offered as an inexpensive policy add-on. For instance, State Farm says its rideshare coverage will add about 15%-20% to your premium, and Mercury offers rideshare insurance for about $27 per month. You can also look into a commercial insurance policy, which is a good option if rideshare insurance is not available in your state.
Insurance Options for Uber Drivers
- Purchase rideshare coverage from your personal auto insurance company.
- Switch to an insurance company that offers rideshare coverage.
- Buy a commercial car insurance policy.
Uber does provide commercial insurance for drivers in most states, but the coverage is limited. For instance, once you accept a ride request, Uber will provide comprehensive and collision insurance, but only if you already have these coverage types on your personal insurance policy.
