I recently switched to PNC Bank from a credit union that I had been using for quite a while. I was eligible for the PNC Performance checking account and signed up for it. I am very pleased with my choice. The checking account perfectly fits my needs and the customer service that I have received from PNC (at my local branch and on the customer service line) has been outstanding!

I originally signed up for this account out of convenience. There is a branch in the supermarket right next door to where I live. But in the course of the last couple of years I've come to really enjoy the services provided by PNC. I've never been great with managing my money, but the PNC website is set up to help with that and it has helped me. I've still messed up here and there and been charged an overdraft fee, but the application of this has been more than fair unlike past banks I've used who try to take every opportunity to charge you a large fee. I do wish the Rewards Points system that PNC has in place offered more place to shop for rewards that were relevant to me. It seems that most rewards I can earn are from places that I have no reason to shop. Overall, banking at PNC has been a really good experience.

My only complaint with this type of checking is the disappearance of PNC Points. I originally had a regular, plain checking ( I'm not sure what PNC calls that as it was National City when I opened it. PNC took over National City.) and loved adding up PNC points for paying bills and using my debit card. However, they took the PNC Points away from that. When I called to ask if I could get My Points back, I was told I qualified for Performance checking and advised to switch. My Performance checking accrued points for a while but then I got a notice that the points program was going to end for it too. Now the only way that I know of to get points is to use my PNC credit card. I've been using debit only because I'm trying to get off of the credit cards.

I have held this account for nearly 10 years now and have always been thrilled with the customer service I receive from PNC. While the interest rates on the Performance Checking account aren't anything to brag about, I will say that PNC clears pending transactions quickly and is always great with resolving any charge issues (either fraudulent or penalty charges that are first time offenses). I highly recommend this account as long as you can maintain the minimum balance to avoid the monthly fee.
