Want more credit card options?WalletHub makes it easy to compare credit card across many companies.
ZERO stars. Maybe BMO Harris is struggling to remain solvent. BMO Harris created the worst credit card experience. Starting in 1997, I held my Diners Club credit card for more than 28 years. I maintained a perfect payment history on a very high balance that was paid in full every month. BMO took over this branded credit card program in 2009 and Stacy Stricker became responsible for the credit card products in 2014. The experience continuously deteriorated year over year. In 2020, without any communication or explanation, they lowered my credit line by $12,000 because, for three months prior (during COVID), we spent 50% less than usual... (like everyone who stopped travel spending.) They could not explain why they lowered it and had no logical reasoning, and no one had authority or answers to help us. Additionally, the once exceptional customer service was reduced to mediocre and often rude.
To increase our credit line back to what we spent monthly, we have to apply for an increase, which we received. But we constantly asked ourselves, "Why did we bother?" We started looking at other cards with the intent to eventually replace Diners Club and cancel them. But long relationships are hard to just end when you remember how good it used to be and hold out hope it will get better. Yet, in 2023, we learned they stopped taking new applications and we kept hearing about ways they worked to remove cardholders. Perhaps they are intentionally slowly phasing out the Diners Club program? There are reports of many who have been asked to downgrade their status from Carte Blanche to regular level but still pay the Carte Blanche annual fee. We always stayed at the same level.
In 2024, I suffered a huge identity theft that landed a criminal in prison, but my 800 credit rating was destroyed to 500s in just two weeks. It has been exhausting to bring it back up, even after all falsely applied for credit cards were closed and eliminated from my credit report. Sadly, this summer, we had a few missed payments due to terminal illness and subsequent death of a family member, leaving behind a nine-year-old. And what did BMO do? With no communication - not a phone call, or mail, or email - BMO revoked our credit on the day our family member died. With only $5,000 in charges on a $15,000 available line, they terminated the 28-year relationship. We paid the balance in full immediately and requested reinstatement, but they didn't care. Terrible. What a nice thank you for paying them millions of dollars over 339 months! They are worthless. Don't waste your time when there are plenty of better card experiences out there.
As others have said, BMO Harris has relegated the Diners Club card to "a dismal state of the franchise these days." If you still have your card and are still hopeful, here is your contact:

Terrible credit card, a total scam, and lack of transparency. I just opened a BMO Platinum card because they offered a 0% balance transfer, which really comes in handy, especially with everything being so expensive. I did the balance transfer, and I made my first payment this week. After I logged in again today to check my account, my available credit wasn't updated. They did apply the payment to my balance, but the available credit was the same. So, I called customer service, and they told me because I made the payment from a non-BMO Harris bank account, their system put a 10-day hold on applying that payment to my available credit. But, of course, the payment cleared my bank account immediately.
Also, when this is reported to the credit bureau, it's not going to show my available credit increasing because of the 10-day hold; the statement will be issued prior to the 10-day hold ending.
So, going forward, I either have to make a deposit into my BMO savings, which I have a small balance in, to avoid a 10-day hold again on applying that toward my account. Which is a total scam and should be against the law, in my opinion. They're holding my money hostage. I wish I could afford to pay off this card. I would close it immediately, but I have to wait until I can afford to pay the whole balance. I can honestly say I have good credit, I have multiple credit cards, and I've never ever had this happen.
I should have read the negative reviews about BMO Harris's credit card and banking practices prior to doing this balance transfer, but it's too late now.

The worst bank I have ever done business with. I cannot use my credit card or send a wire without it triggering a fraud alert. When I call to straighten out the mess, I am treated with rudeness and hostility. I no longer see any use whatsoever for using BMO. If their credit card is useless and wires are routinely canceled, it is impossible to do business with them. I plan on canceling all accounts, that is if the employees at BMO have not emptied them.

My credit card was closed without any notice at all. It was closed on March 30, 2025, and after a week, I received a letter informing me that the account was closed. I have a $3,000 limit and only used around $700 during that time; I was never late making payments. I was upset because my credit score went down 100 points due to the report to the credit bureau of my account being closed. I called and asked them for the reason, but they could not give me one. The person I spoke to said they can close the account with no specific reason. I'm working to dispute this. Such a hassle!

I read a lot of these reviews and had the same issue with this card. I paid online two to three times each month with never a balance over $600 on the $6,800 card. My credit score ranges from 740-780 and I have never been late on any payments. I own a $1.5 million home and drive an $80,000 truck. My income is $250,000/year and I carry $100,000 in credit cards with less than a $1,500 balance, and yet these geniuses sent me a letter closing my account. These people are a disappointment! I would highly recommend getting the Wells Fargo or Citi 0% card over this one. I feel like they are targeting people with bad credit who pay late so they can charge them exorbitant fees. If you have good credit, do not do business with these people. All they seem to want to do is damage someone's credit. I owed $485 when they cancelled my account. And I had $340 in rewards. So, I cashed in the rewards, added $150 to it, and paid it off immediately. Honestly, I considered a lawsuit, but I do not want anything from these greedy individuals. I would dislike them having to stand before my God while I am at His right hand and claim they did anything for me. Good riddance!
I was using my BMO Cash Back credit card regularly and did not miss any payments. They suddenly closed my account without telling me the reason. I called and tried to figure out the reason, but they said they didn't have that information. The customer service was very rude and even just stopped talking and answering my questions, hoping that I would just hang up. I will never do business with BMO again and will never recommend this bank to anyone.

My account started with a car loan. Then, I had a credit card. Neither product was in any form of default, nor were there any late payments on either account. Then I received a letter from BMO stating they were closing my credit card account because my profile did not meet the BMO standards. BMO refused to tell me what standards I failed to meet. Whoever is managing this banking system does not know the meaning of customer service. This corporation treated me poorly, and as such, BMO deserves a 1-star rating.

Wow, what an eye-opener. I should have checked the reviews. I never knew there was such a problem with BMO after they took over Bank of the West, but the same thing happened to me. One day, I was taking out money as usual, and it got declined, so I lowered the amount; again declined. When I called, they said, 'Oh, I'm sorry, your account's been closed,' and couldn't give me a reason why. They told me to call back the next business day. Then, I called back to talk to a different representative, and they couldn't tell me the reason why it was closed. I said, 'What if it was an emergency and I needed money or to use the card? You guys didn't even give me a warning, and what is the reason?' They said, 'Well, we don't have to give you a reason; we can close it at any time, for any reason.' So, I called later on to talk to a supervisor and asked why; they said, 'No, there's no reason, but we don't have to give you a reason. However, apparently, you don't fit the guidelines of the company.' I asked what that was, and they couldn't give me an answer. According to the app, I still had an available amount in my credit line and also for cash advances, so I didn't get a warning, and I didn't get a letter until almost a month later, with no specific reason. The crazy part is, I have never had a credit card just close my account that I was currently using and always paying well above on time. I would pay early, and anytime I took a cash advance, I would pay it off as soon as it posted, so they were making plenty of money in fees alone. But I cannot tell you how much this company has disappointed me, and I wouldn't recommend it even to someone I disliked! It's the worst customer service ever and the worst card ever. You are forewarned, so do not give them your business, or you'll be sorry.

I started out with a truck loan through BMO, which I paid off. Following that, I obtained their credit card and retained it for about 5-7 years. Most of the time, I did not carry a balance. I began using it more at the start of this year, paying it off each month so that earning rewards was beneficial. However, they suddenly canceled it without providing any reason. When I inquired about it, they informed me that they can terminate anyone's account whenever they deem appropriate. That's just terrible customer service, and I will never use their services again. I called the number to redeem my rewards as a statement credit, and the representative informed me that this had happened to many of their customers, even though they had good credit scores and consistently made their payments on time. I would advise everyone to avoid using this company.

I had a credit card from BMO which they closed without notice, stating it was due to 'Bank Policy.' The customer care, collections, and accounts departments do not communicate with each other, and they collect dues that aren't owed. I've never seen customer care hang up on a call and not call back. I spent hours trying to talk and resolve issues, but there was no solution. They claim that all calls are recorded, but they do not refer to them before causing problems. I need to talk to higher management, but there is no email available to reach out. Their customer service is appalling. I will never recommend this bank to anyone. I hope at least now the management will reach out to resolve the issue.
