I worked with the former Vice President (Erin) for Pulaski Bank which is now Busey Bank. It was for the purchase of my first home. I was pre-approved, found the perfect house within budget, and put in a successful bid on it. Due to it being my first time buying, I was very apprehensive and regularly checked up on my loan status. In the weeks before closing on the house, Erin assured me all was well - the loan would be in order and the house would close on time. The two weeks prior to closing, I was checking in nearly daily. Erin once again quelled my worries - up until the day of the walk through prior to signing. Mind you, it was a 3 month closing period - there was plenty of time to smooth any hiccups that may arise with my loan.
At this point, I'd already put in my notice to my landlord and was to be out two days after closing or else I would have to sign for another year lease. My possessions were completely packed and stacked in bins filling my living room. I'd requested a week off of work in order to move my things and settle in my new home.
So! The exciting week of the closing rolled around. I receive a call the day of the walk through - my last day at work before my time off to move - around 10:00 AM from Erin. I see the name appear on my phone and am excited, having the notion that the loan has successfully gone through and now my biggest worry would be what pen to bring to the signing.
The conversation went something like this:
ME: "Hey! What's up?!"
Erin: "Hi, ***, I'm calling regarding your loan..."
ME: "What's up? Do I need to swing by and sign anythin-"
Erin: "I'm sorry, you're loan didn't go through. There's nothing we can do for you."
ME: "What? What do you - how- I was prequalified. I close on Friday. What do you mean it 'didn't go through?'"
Erin: "There's nothing we can do for you. I'm sorry. Bye."
Erin was kind enough to hang up the phone while I was in a total daze after essentially condemning me to homelessness as well as screwing over the sellers of the house who were depending on the sale for the purchase of their new home.
Erin then answered none of my calls or emails and refused to explain why the load had not gone through. Luckily I had THE BEST realtor who called over a dozen banks and loan officers until she found one that would approve my loan - this, however, came at a higher interest rate and required me to put down 20% of the sale (which was the entirety of my savings). Shortly thereafter Pulaski Bank changed its name to 'Busey Bank'. 'New name who's this?' much? I'm now terrified of buying my next home and have no fond 'the magic of purchasing your first house' memories.
