I contacted the company, they counter-offered with 20% back, I said no thank you, and then they counter-offered 30% and stated it was the 'final offer.' I could accept or proceed with the return. I chose to return. The response said the claim was closed, asking "how did we do?" The link was broken, I couldn't log in. So, I contacted PayPal and filed a claim. I explained that the reason for the return was irrelevant and included copies of my receipt, their website, and their money-back guarantee policy. I uploaded everything they requested.
PayPal closed my claim, stating "I got what was described on their site." No, I did not get the money-back guarantee they promised on the website and in the email. PayPal stated I could appeal by a specific date. I went onto the website the day before the deadline to appeal. They asked for all the information again, so I decided to prepare the documents to upload in the morning. The next morning it was too late. Why say I have until the 24th to appeal when it ends on the 23rd?
I contacted customer service to start over. After a week of back and forth, they stated the 'resolution center' claim was denied for the same reason I stated in my initial email. It was extremely frustrating. I went to close my PayPal account and received an email saying "they are committed to blah blah blah, how can we help?" I asked for the corporate address, and it replied "I'm still learning" and didn’t have the information. I rephrased the question, received the same response. I then typed in, "Google is smarter than you, and so is my dog." It responded, "For what purpose would you like the CEO's mailing address?" It turned out it did understand me after all.
I closed my account, never to return, and I'm closing my eBay account too. It cost me $84 to learn that they don't care. To them, we are all just a grain of sand on the beach.
The last several transactions I sent have been taken from my debit card and they are shown on her end as 'refunded.'
However, I have not received the money back.
At present, there is about $250 stuck somewhere in PayPal's system.
They told her when it happened that it would be refunded to my card in 7 days, but it has not appeared.
It is going on two weeks now, and their current story is that it could take up to 30 days to return.
They received the money immediately from my card, and there have been no issues with fraud, so there is no reason for them to hold my money.
Their latest claim is that 'it could take up to 30 days,' which I am guessing refers to 'business days,' meaning 6 calendar weeks.
This is the last time I will be using PayPal to send money.
Do not use PayPal for sending money, either for goods and services or to friends and family - they will hold your money and give you the runaround about getting it to its destination or refunding it.
After weeks with no updates and no response to multiple emails, I contacted PayPal for help. They reached out to the vendor and later informed me that my order would arrive on March 25, 2025. So, I waited.
The 25th came and went—no package. When I followed up with PayPal, expecting a refund, I was shocked to learn that my case had already been closed in favor of the vendor on March 22—three days before the supposed delivery date! The PayPal agent told me nothing could be done.
PayPal then suggested I contact my bank, Chase, but Chase informed me that because I paid via PayPal ACH transfer, I had no recourse for a refund—they only cover transactions made directly with a debit card.
So now, I have no merchandise, no refund, and no support from either PayPal or my bank. What's the point of using PayPal if they don't protect buyers? I will think twice before ever using PayPal again.
Customer service is truly a thing of the past. Buyer beware.
PayPal is notorious for holding funds hostage under the pretext of "protecting purchasers," but let's call it what it is: an abuse of power. They arbitrarily decide when and how you can access your own money, leaving businesses stranded and cash-strapped. Running a business becomes impossible when PayPal plays gatekeeper, releasing funds at a snail's pace only when it suits them.
Their so-called customer service? A complete joke. You're bounced around from one clueless representative to another in an endless loop that never resolves anything. They dodge complaints as if it were an Olympic sport—no proper ticketing system, no direct email, and no phone number to escalate issues. Instead, you're left navigating through a maze of useless links that lead to nowhere.
My advice: ditch PayPal. They treat merchants with complete disregard and unethical behavior that can cripple your business. If you want to save yourself from the nightmare that is PayPal, remove them as a payment option now. Save yourself the frustration, and take your business elsewhere.
