In 1952, ten determined servicemen stationed at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX, each investing $5, joined forces to open Lackland Federal Credit Union—the foundation for what would later become Soarion Credit Union. Despite modest beginnings in a single-room office on base with part-time staff, their vision burned brightly. Within just a... show more

This is the worst bank I have ever dealt with. Payments that I make on time keep getting reversed or not processed at all, even though they show as paid on my end. It creates constant confusion, stress, and unnecessary fees.
I've done my part every time, yet the bank keeps failing. I should not have to chase my own money or worry whether my payments are actually being honored.
I do not recommend this bank to anyone. Be very careful before trusting them with your finances. I am giving them one star. Not because they deserve that star.

Hey there, you guys reported my account as Currently Late to the credit bureau when I'm still in my 10-day window, and it's not the end of the month yet! And on top of that, I'm still waiting for my external account to be verified, so therefore I can't make that payment until then because I have a new account. I can't deal with you guys. I'm just at a loss for words. I won't ever recommend anyone to open an account with you guys. Please see the attachment.

Im CONTINUOUSLY unable to pay my car payments because my account gets locked out almost every month. It's so bad it's actually effected my credit score. Ever since they rebranded to Soarion it's been continuous issues. They shut my autopay off for months without me knowing because of the rebrand and now I get locked out every single month. The must not want me to pay my loan back.

Military active duty and Veterans beware! Soarion Credit Union is absolutely terrible and unethical. I have been with this credit union, previously known as Air Force Federal Credit Union, for 40 years. My family and I have close to $100,000 in our accounts. Ever since they added new debit cards, the majority of my purchases continue to be declined. I have contacted their member services department and their excuses vary depending on whom you speak with. When speaking to a manager, Michael, in the department yesterday, he attempted to mislead me about the declination of my purchases until I confronted him, as a member of his team told me last week that they are experiencing significant fraud with the new debit cards. When I asked how this issue could be rectified on my card, he told me "nothing can be done." I requested to speak with his superior, to which he promptly told me "No." I requested information about filing a complaint with the executive staff to ensure they were aware of the issues with their cards and request their involvement to correct the issue. He refused to provide me with the information, stating "it's not an issue that can be escalated beyond me."
This credit union cannot provide quality service and fraud prevention simultaneously. Their unwillingness to cooperate and communicate with members when issues arise is unbelievable, especially when there are so many other options in the banking community that can provide both in a highly efficient and professional manner. As a veteran, I recommend that every service member, past and present, reconsider using this credit union. They are not dedicated to addressing the unique issues associated with our lives. I will be closing all of our accounts, and I recommend you consider doing the same.

Have had great service here and love the new mobile app. Would give 10 stars for customer service if I could. The name rebrand is nice. For the longest time, I thought only the military could join.

It took five days and multiple phone calls to open a CD. It was the most tedious and aggravating CD buying experience I've ever had—and I have opened a lot of CDs. Had I not kept checking up and prodding them, it might have never been completed, and my nest egg would have sat in my base member account earning 0.05%—not even the scant 0.5% many other low-paying banks still offer at a time when other banks are paying 4.00% on money market accounts and over 5% on CDs.
The third time I called Soarion to try and fix this, I spoke to Gerard, ext. 5573. He said he would send my request to the CD department. I explained that this is what I was told two times previously, but it was never done. I requested that because of the previous two mistakes, the request be expedited, preferably during this phone call. He said that this couldn't be done and it could take another 2-3 business days. He refused to get the CD department to expedite the request. Since there had already been two attempts to correct the problem, that was a very reasonable request.
I asked to talk to a supervisor but Gerard claimed he was the head of the department and refused to let me talk with anyone else. When I pressed him for a means to contact somebody else about my problem, all he would do was give me the member services email address.

I was with this credit union before, and it was okay, but now that I have come back, I am on my second day and I'm closing this account. I have had the worst two-day experience I have ever had in my life. I highly recommend never coming to this bank. It's a terrible bank and offers nothing!

I received a very hurtful letter from AffCU. I don't know why; I've never been late or missed a payment. I was considering trading in my car, but I will now go somewhere else and take all my cash with me, as I do not want to deal with this. When I received the letter, I did not have any negative marks with them. The letter was almost threatening. I will find a car, but not with them.

I opened an account with AFFCU on 9/5/2023. I was looking to change banks and go with a credit union. On 9/14/2023 I transferred $800 from my bank of America account to my savings account with AFFCU. On 9/18 my transferred funds became available to me. When I checked my account to use funds the next day the money in my savings account was back on hold. I waited a couple of days then went back and it was still on hold. I called AFFCU to get an understanding why my money was not available anymore. I was then told that they were waiting to have the funds verified with Bank of America and that they could not get a hold of anyone at bank of America. I took it upon myself to contact BOA to see if there was something else that they needed to do on their end so that AFFCU can release my funds. The representative I spoke with was very nice and understanding and went beyond to make sure there was nothing left on their end to do. I called back the next day which was a Friday 9/22. I spoke to another representative who told me they were still waiting to verify my funds through bank of America and they could not get a hold of anyone. After I questioned why it hasn’t been done and let her know that I did not have a problem getting ahold of anyone from BOA, she then told me they were busy on that day and my funds will be available on Monday 9/25/23. Well Monday come and my funds are still on hold. I called back and was told the exact same thing that I was told the last 3 times I called inquiring about my money is that they were waiting on bank of America to verify my funds. At this point, I have no food, I need to pay my rent and live daily. No one that I spoke to had no compassion about my situation and no resolve. My funds has been on a “general hold” since 9/14/2023. It has now been 12 days with no access to my money. I need my money! I am not happy, the past 12 days has not been good for me. I have been lied to by the representatives and the supervisors.

AFFCU is very difficult to work with... online services work, but take time and have limits. Good luck reaching them by phone! It may take days to get a person and do not expect a call back, so it's worth holding, even hours!!

Oops. I just refinanced my vehicle through "Air Force Federal Credit Union." With a name like that, you'd think they were cutting edge & reputable. The first red flag was when I received the prehistoric "payment slips" in the mail, after which I could not find anywhere on the website to make a payment, which meant I'd have to use them. (I don't even have paper checks - haven't written one in years.) The second was when I noticed, after registering and logging in, that my new payoff with AFFCU is $1,200 more than the payoff amount I refinanced! Judging from the comments above, it's no doubt due to deceptive fees I failed to notice in the fine print. I'm usually pretty good about Q.C. on issues like this, especially regarding my money, but it looks like I've learned a hard lesson. Now I'll be vigilant on these guys like white on rice until I've escaped!

To get a loan from Air Force Federal Credit Union, you need to become a member. And typically, yes, in order to be eligible, you must be a member or former member of the military or a civilian working for the Department of Defense. However, there are other factors which may help you qualify, which you can find here: https://www.airforcefcu.com/resources/join-now/membership-eligibility.
It depends on the type of account you're looking for. If you want to open a credit card account, then there will be a credit check. But if you apply for a checking or savings account, there will not be. In that case, banks generally take a look at your ChexSystems report, which is different from your credit report because it lists bad consumer banking history, such as outstanding overdrafts or bounced checks.
Yes, once you become a member you can apply for a Visa card (https://www.airforcefcu.com/personal-accounts/credit-cards/platinum-credit-card). Air Force Federal Credit Union does not offer Mastercard credit cards.
