First up, they switched payment addresses without informing us, and when I called to find out why our automatic bank payments were no longer going through they told me quite gruffly that it was OUR responsibility to notice when the mailing address for payments on the monthly invoice had changed. Nice.
Second, in the past 12 months they have changed the way they list the amount due on their invoices. Originally they listed the total due as you would expect - highlighted as the total amount due, and then in would list in another place the late fee that would be charged if the payment is not received before the due date. Now their new format rolls the late fee into the total everywhere it is listed, in a blatant attempt to trick the borrower into paying the late fee as well when it isn't due. I will try to demonstrate:
1. Total Amount Due at the top of the page in the big square - the first thing your eye sees: it only lists the TOTAL INCLUDING THE LATE FEE with no breakdown. It does say underneath this padded total that "$zzz late fee will be charged if the payment is not received by zz/zz/zzzz." But this makes it seem as though the inflated total is what is due, and that the late fee will be added AGAIN if your payment is late.
2. Explanation of Amount Due - the more detailed box underneath the first one, halfway down the page. This one lists the correct total amount due under the entry "Regular Monthly Payment" in the middle of the stack of numbers, and then it lists the late fee and finally LISTS THEM COMBINED AT THE BOTTOM AS THE TOTAL AMOUNT DUE in bold.
3. Payment Coupon - On the payment coupon at the bottom of the invoice THE CORRECT TOTAL DUE DOES NOT APPEAR AT ALL!!!!! Only the inflated total with the late fee included (which is not due yet) appears here, and it does not explain that the late fee is included. You just get a trick total on the left in an eye-catching box that shows the padded amount, and then over on the right that same inflated total appears in very large text below the words "Payment Coupon" with no explanation that there is an unnecessary late fee hidden in this total.
This trick they are using did not catch us because our correct payments are taken automatically via direct debit, but every time I see these invoices come in the mail now, I wonder if anyone out there is falling for this trick. I am no legal expert, but this seems a shady practice to me. I wanted to report it in the hopes that at least someone reads this and pays a bit more attention to their bill.
Ideally the company should voluntarily change their invoice layout ,or be forced to do so by a government agency or consumer watchdog.
Very good account of my financial reports. I've used credit karma previously and have always liked it. I'm glad I've decided to download app again
