I've been with First merit for a few years now, and they have been alright except for one issue. I'm used to receiving free checks from banks but I believe they stopped doing that, so I'll probably be switching to another bank. If you don't mind paying for checks, First merit is pretty good.

I have been with First Merit for quite some time now. For the most part they are a decent bank but they have some issues. The prices of checks are quite expensive, they have a horrible policy for overdrafts, and generally just bad customer service overall. Any time I've had issues with them and had to deal with the customer service I've always left unsatisfied and frustrated. I am currently looking for another bank to switch to as I have had enough of them.
I have used First Merit for around 6 months now. I personally had no problems with it but my girlfriend recently had an unauthorized charge appear on her banking statement. We noticed it only after it had put her into overdraft. We called the bank up and even went down there and while they did reverse the unauthorized charge, they didn't reverse the overdraft fees that were charged. Even though she wasn't responsible for it! With horrible customer service like this we both decided to look else where for banks.

I have been with First Merit Bank for about a year now. They are a good bank and seem to be adding new features quite often. They recently added mobile banking options so that is pretty cool. There's no fees either with my account anyway, so that makes it great in my book. I have no complaints with them really.

I have had an account with First Merit Bank for a few years now and they're a pretty good bank. There's no crazy fees or anything so that's always good. I don't believe there is a minimum balance either. The customer service is good as well. I have a few other bank accounts but this one is pretty much average compared to the others. Not bad but not great either. It's a good bank though.

I used to be a member with Citizensbank before they were bought out by First Merit. There haven't been too many problems. Customer service isn't the best, but not horrible or anything. No unnecessary hidden fees or charges. Just make sure you don't go over draft because their fee's are ridiculous. Other than that, they are a pretty good bank.

A while ago I was a member of another bank that I guess was bought out or changed over to what is now First Merit. I had a Firstmerit Bank Reality Checking account for some time, and mostly had no issues. Until one day my card was used to make purchases that I did not authorize. These purchases took my account into overdraft The fees kept piling on and I went to the bank to get it sorted out. Well, long story short, only SOME of the fees were reversed, I actually had to pay some of the fees because of the overdraft which they wouldn't reverse. After that, and the other unnecessary fees like the paper balance fee of $3.00. I decided to leave that bank and take my money elsewhere.
FirstMerit is a great bank if you live in North East Ohio. They have a lot of branches and a small bank atmosphere to them. They have great rates on their savings products and have always been very quick to resolve any issue that I may have. They offer any service you could need and have many services that small banks usually do not. The only small complain I have is that some of their fees have increased over the last several years.

I have been so happy with this bank. I have not been charged unexpected fees. They have always met or exceeded my expectations. I live in a moderate sized town and i usually use the ATM. I have gone in to the office maybe five times in two years yet they remember me. I was overseas and my debit card got blocked. Rather than making me make several international calls (to the fraud department) I called my bank and they made sure it got fixed for me and did all the leg work. Another time my debit card was hacked and i had fraudulent charges, i contacted my bank and they did the necessary paper work and even called me to follow up. I get the benefits of a large bank but the feel of a small one with FirstMerit. I love this bank.

I've had a FirstMerit Bank Reality Savings Account since 2009 and for the past five years I've been very pleased with FirstMerit's performance on this account. The fluctuation of interest rates in our U.S. economy has not been overly friendly to my savings account, however when looking at the performance of a savings account from how well the bank or financial institution performs, one must understand that the bank doesn't control the economy.
You must have a FirstMerit checking account to be eligible to open this specific Savings Account and while FirstMerit does not require a specific minimum balance for the Reality Savings Account, there is a minimum $50 deposit in order to open the account.
The monthly service charge of $10 is waived when customers have at least five debit or credit transactions per month with their FirstMerit checking account.
I choose to take advantage of FirstMerit's online banking, including their mobile phone app to manage all of my accounts as well as their paperless statements which enable me to help the environment.
Overall I highly recommend a FirstMerit savings account for anyone looking to do business with a really great bank!

I have had a First Merit Reality checking account for about 5 years now. I have only ever had a few problems with it and those were problems with people getting my account number and charging this to my account. In those incidents I always had top rate customer service and they answered any questions or concerns I had in a timely manner. They were also very quick about getting my account back to where is should be. The staff at the branch I go to is very courteous and always willing to go that extra step for their customers. I would highly recommend a Checking Account at First Merit!
FirstMerit Bank is a great regional bank. They have offices in both the Akron and Chicago area. I began doing business with them because at that time I was traveling between Akron and Chicago. I found opening an account to be painless and all of the staff to be very friendly. While banking with them I was actually the victim of check fraud and the personnel out of both the Twinsburg and Corporate office were nothing but a pleasure to work with. They resolved my issue and I was refunded very quickly. I would highly recommend them to anyone in an area they serve.

For as long as I had this bank, I would say I have never been so pleased in such a short amount of time with any other bank. Their customer service is superb and whenever you walk into one of their local banks, you're always greeted warmly. What they offer is quiet sincere also, just have to watch out for those overdraft fees!

For the last few years I was using a direct deposit bank card for my paychecks. There are no branches of the bank in my state, I used ATMs for all bank interactions, and online banking to keep track. When I started a new job, the checks were drawn from First Merit, and I was told it would take a few weeks before they would have my direct deposit set up, so I stopped into the local First merit to see if they could cash the paper check for a fee. At one time, they used to cash paychecks drawn from their banks for a $10 fee; but they don't offer this service any longer. However, they asked if I wanted to set up an account, which would allow me to cash the check for free. I was short on time, but they told me that they would be happy to set it up and have me come back in to sign the paperwork later when I was able. I then told them I couldn't swing the $100 minimum deposit for free checking, and they asked what I could afford to put in. The money was for rent, and I explained that I needed it right away, so they offered to let me deposit just $10 (what I was willing to pay anyway to cash it). They took a copy of my driver's license, cashed the check, and I was out the door in 5 minutes. Later that day, they left me a message to let me know I could stop in anytime to sign and pick out my checks. Since then, I've been completely smitten with this bank. Everything has been a breeze with them, from the initial set up, to making deposits and withdrawals. My direct deposits/bank transfers are completed in 24 hours (unheard of), and the people at my local branch in North Ridgeville are amazing. Any time I have questions, they handle things courteously and quickly. I've never had an issue with finding ATMs, and they have excellent branch hours as well, which makes my life easier. The biggest win in my book was last month, when I accidentally overdrew my account by $0.34. I fully expected this small change mistake to turn into a pricey debacle, and was dreading the NSFs I knew were coming, and then.... just a quick note letting me know I did overdraw, but that they wouldn't be charging me any NSFs. Granted, I'd put money back in as soon as I saw the overdraft, and it was only 34 cents, but any other bank would have gleefully dropped a $34.00 fee, on top of daily $7.00 accruing fees, and God knows what else they came up with. I can't speak for other banks, but First Merit has truly given me a new perspective when it comes to banking, and I highly recommend them to anyone who is looking for a bank that actually treats the customer like a customer, and not like they're doing you a favor by allowing you to do business with them. The free checking actually gives you free checks, (apparently other banks haven't caught on to the irony of charging for them). Their online services are excellent – aesthetically simple and efficient and they allow me to keep track of my bank deposits and spending during the off-hours, when I'm mainly using them. I honestly can't say enough good stuff about them; I'm incredibly grateful to have found a place that treats me as well as they do.

Their customer service has always been very nice to me. Every time I enter the bank to do business with them, I am greeted and they are friendly and kind. I find it a little strange that in order to withdraw money from my checking account, I must write a check to myself. I am used to banks that have a slip specifically for withdrawing from a checking account. This isn't exactly a problem it's just odd. They were also very helpful the one day I called because I knew there was more in my account then there should have been, and I needed to know which transaction was no longer processing. The lady who answered was very helpful and gave me all the info I needed and explained her thoughts on why it was back in my bank account. They also were very helpful and kind to me when I went to first sign up for my account. I was surprised how easy it was to get an account, considering I had had a bankruptcy recently.
