University Credit Union (UCU) is a unique financial solution for students, employees and alumni of Maine's University System, as well as their family members. There are a lot of great things that make UCU unique, with the most important difference being that they are a local, not-for-profit financial institution focused on serving their members.... show more

I originally opened an account with UCU when I got my student loan with them while attending UMaine. Until now, I had a very neutral view of them because of my limited experience. Recently, though, I started trying to consolidate my accounts spread across half a dozen banks, and I landed on UCU. It has all the things I'd been looking for with its club accounts and great rates. Now, I use it almost exclusively (I got a better rate for my IRA elsewhere, and I already have credit accounts at other institutions) for banking and loans. They gave me a much better auto rate than I had or expected to get, and I truly believe that they want to make things as pleasant as possible for members. If you're ever in Orono, I recommend Rebecca, who goes between the location in the Memorial Union at UMaine and the headquarters.

This used to be an excellent credit union. We used them for many years, but a year or two before the pandemic their customer service deteriorated and it has been abysmal since. Just hard to get people on the phone. I think all the loan officers "work" from home—it takes forever to get a phone call returned and then you can hear the dog barking in the background. We have moved our banking to Bangor Savings, which is excellent, but Camden National and Bar Harbor Bank and Trust are also terrific local choices. We've always preferred credit unions to banks, but I will take a quality local bank over the horrific service at UCU any day.

Was never overly impressed, but now they are continuing to accumulate interest on deferred mortgages during this pandemic. Shame on them for trying to increase their profits at the expense of desperate Americans.

Worst Credit Union Ever! Took 600 out of my checking account without explanation or warning. I researched this (on my own, because they weren't going to help me) and it was a mistake they made last summer! I did receive a lot of condescending attitude but no explanation. They are terrible and very arrogant. It is one of the best decision of my life to get rid of them and go to an institution that respects me as a human being.

Having switched to UCU from Bank of America, I have to say I had low expectations for my satisfaction level with a banking institution. I am happy to report that UCU has been fantastic in every possible way. The staff are friendly and extremely helpful as I have opened joint checking and savings accounts, as well as applied for two car loans. I was able to work with the same person each time I required service within the branch. This really reduced the stress associated with applying for loans and opening new accounts.

I've had a great experience with the University Credit Union. I chose to switch my banking there mostly because of the location and close proximity to my University. I've always had pleasant experiences with their customer service and have found them to be knowledgeable. Once, I misplaced my checkbook, and they were quick to offer to print a sheet of replacement checks so that I could 'get by' and pay my bills on time without having to wait for a new order of a checkbook to come in. I only maintain a checking account through them, but I've never had any complaints. I try not to use other ATMs to extract cash, because unlike my account at a Bangor Savings Bank, they do not seem to reimburse the fees usually associated with ATM withdrawals.

I have moved out-of-state and still have not switched banks. Between BillPay, linked accounts allowing me to transfer funds, and no fees, I've found UCU's on-line services to be more complete, convenient and cost-effective than any local credit unions that I've checked out in Maryland. I do all my banking on-line. On the rare occasions (2 in 3 years) that I need a branch, I use the Shared Branch arrangement. Once in a great while I need to talk to the branch and they generally have been able to answer my questions and solve my problems. While in Maine we also refinanced our mortgage through UCU and they made it simple and offered a great rate. About the only service that is cumbersome is doing an international transfer of funds.

My experience with UCU hasn't been the greatest. Their business hours are very poor during the summer months. It is almost impossible to get in for a person to person meeting. There is only one branch of UCU that even remains open during the summer, so if you don't live near the university during the summer, you will have to do all of your banking online. I once drove 2 hours to get to the only UCU that was open so that I could get a deposit slip. And when I got there they made me fill out a form, so that I could pick up the deposit slip tomorrow, because they were about to close. Its just a horribly inconvenient way to do business. The application process was easy, because they want to get as many students as possible to be a part of their credit union.

I have had nothing but great experiences with University Credit Union and have been a member for over 10 years. They’ve always been very quick with replacing faulty debit cards and, depending on your location, their ATMs are in high traffic areas and readily accessible. Additionally, the customer service is top notch. They have refunded overage fees for me before and been, overall, remarkably helpful when it came to any issues that I might have with my account. I find that their office on the Orono campus tends to be very busy and can be frustrating while you wait however all of their other branches seem to be much less congested. I would definitely recommend this credit union.
