Both my brother n I visited Webster First Federal Credit Union, Winthrop location, Wed. July 28, 2021, which together we take care of our banking every Wed. for quite some time. My brother will go in conducting his banking through the ATM machine, while I wait outside in my vehicle with my handicap daughter. Once my brother Michael has completed his business, I will then go in and conduct my banking as well as do my deposits for our business. During this time my brother will sit with my handicap daughter Marissa until all my banking is complete. My husband and my son all have been banking with Webster First, for many years. We started with this Winthrop branch, since they opened years ago. In addition to our personal banking we also trust and value Webster First Federal Credit Union to also be a part of our business bank account as well. Unfortunately, this particular day, my brother was taking longer than usual, I could not go in and leave Marissa, so i patiently waited. Usually his banking was quick, i felt this is not the norm, something is wrong. Finally, when my brother Michael told me and our Mom, Margie who was on the phone with me, the whole time, now she and I listen to my brother explain in detail what took place. My brother went in used his normal Santander ATM card, as he always does, even pays the initial fee, every week just to help me out while i conduct my business, while he watches his niece Marissa. Michael stated he was able to withdraw his finances with no problem, however his card got jammed into machine. A young employee came out to foyer and politely said she would obtain his card and simply give it to him, she asked him if his business was finished and he stated yes, he withdrew his monies, he has completed his transaction he just needed his card back. She got his card and like she said was going to give it to him, then all of a sudden, she raised her voice, and said "im not giving this to you, this is not your card. The card is our MOM's card which my brother is the beneficiary, and your institution has been giving my brother money using this card for quite some time. Our complaint is a woman in an office Ms. McQue, never went out of her way to even diffuse the problem. I know, with our family name and business we conduct there, she could have maybe taken some type of initiative and called Santander bank call my Mom, or even call my husband or myself. Instead she was extremely rude, unprofessional, in fact incompetent and lacked customer service skills. In stead of trying to talk slowly and at least try to make an effort to try to make the customer happy, she takes his card and shreds it, just to add to this awful and inconvenience situation. This to me was an act that displayed cruelty, and in a sense bullying. She knew and took total advantage of the situation but in a very negative and unprofessional way. I just want to remind you, this institution has been allowing my brother to withdraw or deposit money weekly using this card which was taken from his possession, i myself find that to be somewhat of a criminal act of thievery, where a young lady takes my brothers card, basically she took his personal property. My husband, my son, my mother, my brother and our business partner all feel that just maybe if Ms. Mcque was not so indulged in eating her lunch, she may have acted differently, but at that moment her priority was to continue eating while speaking, then shreds the card so to expedite the whole mishap, so she can continue eating, without interrupting her continuous chewing of her food. But this act alone in addition to the unprofessional way this was handled, has now led my family to close out their personal, as well as the closure of our business accounts. We will make this known to our fellow businesses and acquaintances who conduct their banking with your institution. Your so called attributes, stating, "Webster First Federal Credit Union, where strength you can depend on", "we pride ourselves with the highest level of service", "we value our members our neighbors, we support our customers". Unfortunately these are attributes that absolutely are false to your "institution". Sincerely.
This is a direct contract to the new ownership: Webster First Credit Union. There seemingly is a fee for almost every service. I receive sales mail and email continuously, and finding a person to talk to that knows what they are doing is very difficult (the exception is the crew at the original ICU branch)
Never going back.
I recall one occasion in which I had overdrawn my debit card several times with no notification from the bank. I was very upset by this so I went to the bank to see if I could get some of the fees reversed. Not only did the banker reverse my fees, she recommended that I get the app and gave me all the information and paperwork I needed to check my account regularly.
I plan to continue being a customer at WFCU for the foreseeable future.
That is exactly what I found at Webster First. I spoke with a window teller and an accounts specialist on my first visit, and I was treated with courtesy and friendliness. In addition, Webster First had exactly what I was looking for... free transfers of funds from one account to another in the case of an "oops" which happens every now and then (meaning overdraft protection from your own accounts).
I even called two weeks after opening the accounts, and the associate I spoke with was very helpful, friendly, and personable as she answered my questions. Although I have only had my account with Webster First for a couple of months, I have been very pleased. In addition to the 'small bank' feel, I have the backing of all of the federal credit unions... which also makes banking during travel very convenient!
Pros: There is a free mobile app and online banking is also extremely easy. I mostly use the mobile app to check my balance and deposit checks. How cool is it that you can take a picture of your check and have it instantly deposited, without ever physically going to the bank? I also like the bounce protection program. Sometimes the tellers in person can be quite helpful and nice. Also, it is free to transfer money to and from accounts at other credit unions and there are no teller fees.
Cons: Why do I get charged debit fees? This is a credit union, not a for-profit bank. I stopped using my debit card for this reason and instead use a different credit union for debit purchases. Also, some of the tellers have been less than friendly when conducting simple transactions.
Compared to other credit unions: Webster First is okay, but not the best. I have a second credit union membership that is far superior, with auto-enrolled bounce protection, free rainy day account, NO FEES on any type of anything, free checkings and savings, everything. In comparison, Webster first is just.... good, but I have seen better.
Compared to for-profit banks: I would recommend a Webster First Federal Credit Union account over ANY for-profit bank. Webster First will offer the same services as a bank for less fees. Webster First is better than any bank at all. (Why do people even have banks, when they are for profit, meaning they WANT to make money off you?) If you live in Massachusetts, enjoy mobile banking, and want the same services as a bank, this credit union's for you.
