WalletHub's Take: The OneUnited Bank Unity Secured Credit Card is a below-average option for people with bad credit who are trying to rebuild. It reports to the major credit bureaus monthly, which is a must-have, but it charges a $39 annual fee and does not offer rewards. Plenty of cheaper, more rewarding credit card offers are available to people with poor credit.

Cons

I'm inclined to agree with the majority of the reviews I have read in regards to the 1 star rating or less. I went from..."ok, so far so good" to "I gotta switch banks" I opened a credit card....I cant see my transactions online, it takes a week for payments to post even though I do automatic bill pay through my checking account. I get the credit card and got embarrassed the first day...it didn't work after I activated it. Then, when I called customer service, they wanted $10 to replace the card. The customer service rep cancelled the card because I said I wasn't paying for a replacement and neglected to tell me. Here I am trying to use the card again not knowing it was cancelled. For them to be speaking on "Uplifting" The Black Community and "Creating Financial Wealth" for blacks....... I am getting the opposite feeling. Now I will go to the Checking section and post there. Sorry, but I would NEVER recommend One U nited at this time.

I wouldn't give them a negative five-star rating! My husband complains every month about this bank regarding a secured card he opted for to build his credit so we can purchase a home. Long story short, they only allow you to make one payment per month. In turn, if you need to pay your balance off for a rescore with the credit bureaus to show your score has increased to get pre-approval for a mortgage, this company will not assist you in doing so. One thing I am is an advocate for what's right. I legitimately researched the company's CEO, COO, and whoever else is at the top. They're all on LinkedIn! You can even access their email addresses through Google. My husband reached out asking them to please allow him to pay off his balance. Can you believe this bank sent an email stating they only allow one payment—even after pleading that we are trying to purchase a home? Stay far away from this bank. Go to Capital One, Credit Unions, and other reputable banks that will help you regardless of your background. It's ironic. They're not even assisting African Americans with better banking. I am just disgusted by their ability to have a mission statement that does the opposite of what they are actively doing to customers. You all should be ashamed of yourselves! I will be filing a complaint with the FDIC and BBB.

Do not get a credit card from this bank. You can only pay once per month, and the maximum payment allowed is $600. They don't report to the credit bureaus, which means there is no building credit. They removed the Speedway online payment link, which forced me to pay by phone. Now, they are not refunding my deposit after I closed the account, even though it has been over 30 days. I recommend that everyone file a complaint with the BBB and FDIC so that this bank can be held accountable at some point.

Total failure in payment solutions. First, it was payment using Western Union. Then the app failed to recognize my account. Countless times calling customer service to reset my passwords and staying on hold for an hour or more for account access. Then, once with an agent—horrible attitude and heated conversation. Why? I'm just asking to reset my password to pay my bill. Now I'm 60 days late unless I mail in a check. You will wait 365 more days before I mail a check in. Get your stuff together or close your banking altogether.

If I could rate lower, I definitely would. I've been trying to get in contact with somebody that can help me. I had my car broken into and all my credit cards were stolen. I've been trying to contact someone for the last two months to help me just make a payment and waited for my new credit card. However, it never arrived, and it dinged my credit multiple times for being late. I have called the customer service representative countless times to see if I can make a payment over the phone, even with my Social Security information, but they have refused me. I've asked to speak with management, but every time they said they were going to transfer me, the call got disconnected. This is honestly the worst establishment to try to build your credit with. By no means do they help build your credit; they worsen it by not allowing their customers to make any payment over the phone or even sending a new card in the mail. Due to no fault of my own, they have charged me countless late fees and reported me to the credit bureau for being late time and time again. I have pleaded with representatives to please take a payment, however, I have been met with defeat each time. They are looking to charge excessive late fees. They are looking to report you to the bureau even when you are more than happy to make a full payment to pay off your credit card. The funny thing is, my payment was only five dollars, and yet it has caused my credit to drop over 37 points due to their incompetence. I have disputed it multiple times, but they keep on saying that the information is correct. Save yourself the trouble; do not use this specific credit card to build your credit. It will only hurt you in the long run and try to charge you for fraudulent missed payments. This is probably honestly the most corrupt credit card department I have ever been a part of. Please look at the ratings; you will see I am not the only one with these issues that have not been addressed. Save yourself the headache and go somewhere else. You guys should be ashamed of yourselves, preying on people who are truly trying to get their credit in order. You guys are a scam. And the Boroughs should shut your facilities down. I will be contacting a lawyer and filing a lawsuit against you and your facility.

We are sorry to hear you are experiencing difficulties making payments. We understand that having all of your credit cards stolen can be frustrating. When customers report a credit card lost or stolen, a new card with a different number is issued. Customers that utilize another financial institution's bill pay service to make payment to their Unity Visa secured credit card must update the information with the new Unity Visa secured credit card to ensure payment is successfully processed. Months ago, we received your email and replied within 24 hours explaining in great detail that you needed to update your bill pay service’s credit card information with the new Unity Visa secured credit card number. We kindly request that you check your inbox, spam folder, and email settings to ensure that you are not missing any of our communications. As explained in the emailed response, based on the information you provided, your other financial institution was sending payment to the card that was closed when you reported it stolen. Payments made to the stolen card were transferred automatically from the closed card to your open card before the closed cards were purged from our system. Payments sent after the system purge were sent back to your financial institution. Please note that paying your bill is easy! There are several ways to make a UNITY Visa Secured Card payment. I had a secure visa with OneUnited. The account was closed due to inactivity. I've been trying to get my deposit back for months. They lied and said a check would be mailed to me. I never received it. I get images of all my mail and it never arrived. Now they're having me to re-upload the exact same information they already have. I've uploaded the information and faxed it, and I still haven't heard anything. I'm on my fourth attempt at submitting the information, and still nothing. I feel like there may be scammers working for their company.

This bank is terrible. For starters, you can only make a payment to your credit card once every month! Who at kind of bank only allows one payment? Once you do make a payment, they will hold they payment for up to two weeks. Funds are not naturally during that time. When you call customer service, no one can seem to give you answers. The only response is they will put in a request for someone to contact you. And even then all you get is some automated email to “answer” your questions. I have closed this account due to the unnecessary headache. There are much better banks for credit cards.

Terrible customer service. If they decide to answer the phone, they'll put you on hold for forty minutes, then oops, the call drops. Closing my account took MONTHS, I never received a pin for the debit card. They block complaints on their social media platforms.
