I had to get a prepaid card when I was trying to build up my credit and I got the Silvercard Prepaid Mastercard but I didn't do any research and made a big mistake. I do not recommend this card at all because I called customer service after I tried to transfer money to the card and there was a week delay, they charged me to talk to them. After that I transferred money back off of the card and I was going to cancel the account they charged me a fee to cancel lol. I spent more time on the phone and eventually got all the fees removed but what a scam this card is. Go with a Walmart card or something else.

I needed a credit card separate from my bank-issued debit card, mostly in order to process transactions online through Amazon and eBay. I thought a prepaid card would be the way to go since I didn't have to go through the hassle of applying for a card with an actual legitimate credit limit. It's very easy to use, and the fact that there is no fee for transferring or putting money on this card is attractive. The other fees, in my opinion, make this a poor choice however. There is even a fee to contact customer service, which I haven't done for this reason. There was one month where my monthly fee exceeded the purchases I made with this card. To activate it was ten dollars, and to cancel it (which I ended up doing) was another fifteen dollars. I don't understand why there was an inactivity fee. I felt as though they were watching everything I did to make sure I was using this card just right. For this reason, I can't in good faith recommend this to anyone else.

I've used this for quite a while now. Mainly for online transactions. The fees can be a bit spendy but the ease of it makes up for it in my opinion. I don't have an account, so this is an easy alternative. I had a lot of transactions from it with paypal. I had an issue once when putting money onto paypal, but I contacted the customer support. I usually hate those, but this one was surprisingly helpful. I didn't have to wait very long and I could actually understand what the person was saying. I finally got it resolved after being on the phone for probably only fifteen to twenty minutes. Overall there might be better offers out there but I choose this one, and I'd probably use it again. It's not too bad of a deal.

Well, a quick glance at the SilverCard Prepaid Card’s fees should leave you pretty concerned. It charges nearly $10 for activation, $4 per month, $1 for making a purchase that requires you to enter your PIN, and $2 per ATM withdrawal. Furthermore, it charges $2 for live customer service, $4 per month if you don’t use your card for 6 months, and $15 to cancel your account. Wow, what doesn’t the Prepaid SilverCard charge for? This type of fee structure is what you want to avoid when looking for a prepaid card.

You see, there are cheap cards out there, you just have to know where to look. The GreenDot Prepaid Card, American Express Prepaid Card, and Chase Liquid Card are good starting points. The GreenDot is free if you load $1,000 per month via direct deposit (e.g. paycheck), the Amex is free if you only make one ATM withdrawal per month, and while the Chase Liquid Card costs nearly $5 per month, it doesn’t charge for much else. Any of these cards would be a far better option than the SilverCard MasterCard Prepaid Card.
