Car insurance from USAA is very affordable. The company ranks in the cheapest quartile among major car insurance providers, according to WalletHub’s cost comparison data.
USAA Home Insurance Review Highlights
USAA offers traditional homeowners and renters insurance policies. The company also offers coverage for condo owners and landlords.
A homeowners insurance policy from USAA protects your home and other structures on your property from damage caused by risks such as fire, theft, vandalism, most weather events, and more. It also covers the cost to repair or replace your personal belongings if they are damaged or lost due to a covered event. Plus, homeowners insurance from USAA will help pay for additional living expenses if your home is being repaired because of a covered loss.
Renters insurance from USAA covers your personal belongings in your rental from more than a dozen risks, including fire, hail and theft. Its liability coverage also protects you financially if a guest gets hurt, or their property is damaged, while visiting you at home. Another major perk of a USAA renters insurance policy is that it protects your possessions from damage caused by floods and earthquakes. USAA renters insurance covers your belongings if something happens to them while you’re moving them or they’re in storage, too.
Homeowners can add the flood and earthquake insurance policies that come standard with renters insurance as well.
Bottom Line: Is USAA a Good Insurance Company?
USAA is a really good insurance company for members of the military community, thanks to the cheap premiums and generous discounts with its auto, property and life insurance policies. USAA earned a rating of 3.5/5 by WalletHub’s editors as USAA could work on improving its customer service and claims handling process.

USAA frickin sucks. Their customer service is abominable. I just started an auto policy with them and they said they would not do a homeowner's policy with us, but would connect us with a third party who could. I called in for this and was placed on hold for half an hour and, when it seemed like they had no intention of ever picking up the phone, I gave up and hung up. I called in again to get someone to expedite a transfer and they wouldn't transfer me to a rep until I stated what I was calling for, but despite me shouting into the phone they couldn't seem to pick up anything from me and kept on ranting their automated message. Then the lady who finally picked up said she would "warm" transfer me this time and that it would be only 2 min. (Why then wasn't it that way for me the first time?!) Well, I have now been on hold for another 15 min and there does not seem to be any intention of picking up, again. They probably are over there twiddling their thumbs or having an extended lunch break. Bottom line is, USAA SUCKS AND I WOULD STRONGLY RECOMMEND NOT USING THEM!!!!

I have had USAA for over 20 years. My dad had it and my children have it. Just made a claim only to be told I don't have home owners insurance. I was told it was cancelled in 2021. I was not given a reason why or why it was cancelled. We had a Strom come thru doing damage to my roof. I've been paying USAA 550 a month thinking my homeowners insurance was part of the price. I just paid 1200 to have a tree removed and the roof repaired. Will be looking for another insurance company that wants my business. Shame on you USAA and how you treat veterans.

I was with USAA for 40 years. The operative word... was! After their new CEO and the policies of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion were implemented, they seemed to decline rapidly. Despite having no claims, our insurance increased by 23%. When questioned, the representative was understanding but blunt about the increase without providing any explanation. I immediately started insurance shopping (the first time in 40 years) and switched companies as quickly as possible. We saved an incredible $143 a month for multiple vehicles, and our current insurance actually offers better coverage and includes more than USAA did. It is disappointing to see a company that always supported the military and veterans adopt policies that do not align with those values. I hope that USAA reflects on its recent losses and either returns to the exceptional customer service it provided a few years ago or faces the consequences of its current direction. As an honorably discharged veteran and a former 40-year member of your company, I urge you to address these issues. If not, let those Patriots who hold true to their principles voice their concerns and leave what they believe to be a substandard example of a "military supporting" company.

"I had USAA Car, Home, Umbrella, and Valuables policies. I encountered multiple problems with them, mostly related to Customer Service. The only way to contact them with questions is via phone. Their phone system is terrible, as you keep getting bounced around from one person to another. I found an email address, but the message I sent was returned with a note saying that their email address is not set up to receive emails.
I finally had enough of them and had their auto policy reviewed by several other insurance providers to make sure I had similar coverage. Both of them said that I was not covered for Uninsured Motorists and Underinsured Motorists with USAA. I was shocked by this, as these two coverages are extremely important. Perhaps this is why their auto coverage is so cheap. I should have noticed this when buying their coverage, but I did not.
I eventually decided to cancel all four policies, and the process was difficult.
It took about an hour on the phone to cancel. Initially, when I called, they wanted to know the topic, and as soon as I said "cancel policies," I was connected to the Security Center. This conversation took the most time as they went through a long process to verify my identity and to confirm all of my personal codes, passwords, and information were correct. They also inquired about why I wanted to cancel. I was then transferred to an "Insurance Specialist" who knew nothing at all about cancellations. After that, I was forwarded to several other people and finally to the "Cancellation Team." This person reiterated all the same questions that the Security Team asked. By this time, I was very frustrated.
I finally had the policies canceled by this last person an hour after being bounced around from one person to another.
I have to compliment these people because they were all polite to me, but they were all poorly trained and often redundant.
Now, I pay slightly more with a better company, but it is worth it.

I have been a customer of USAA for over 10 years. Besides the occasional insurance rate increase due to my cars aging out of certain policies, for the most part, I would say that they have decent products. I've had car loans, bank accounts, insurance policies for home, auto, and life. Unfortunately, in the last couple of years, I have noticed a difference in how they treat you as a customer. I'm not sure if management has changed, but the products and rates they offer have not been as reasonable. I am now being assessed an installment fee to pay my car insurance just because I don't want to enroll in an automatic payment plan. This is new and not something I have ever had to worry about before. I always pay my bill early and have rarely missed a payment. I can understand offering a discount as an incentive for using an automatic payment plan, but charging an installment fee to pay as I always have regularly is ridiculous. They are penalizing customers for not enrolling in an automatic payment plan. I'm strongly considering taking my accounts and insurance needs elsewhere.

USAA auto insurance sucks. I was hit by a man in a truck on back right corner of my corvette. The old man that hit me lied and told USAA that I hit him. USAA made me get proof. I had to get a video from a camera and witness before they would cover it. My car has been in shop for 3.5 months and still there. Lacy Jones with USAA is absolutely terrible at her job. She lies a lot and delays work on your car. Pray you are never hit by a person insured by USAA they screw you right and left. My car is still in the shop since 8/1/25 and she canceled the rental car I had on 10/3/25 and did not tell me. Then I get a surprise charge on my credit card from car rental company and nobody told me crap. I have been in wrecks before and never treated like this by an insurance company. If you do get involved with USAA I suggest you document everything in writing, pictures, call and email everyday. They suck so does Lacy Jones. I have also told family members that now days everyone should have a camera on every car to protect you against liars and USAA. My rating in minus 1000.

I set up my account for autopay. USAA canceled it for some reason, and I called and set it up again. But because it was set up again, I was supposed to make a manual payment instead of autopay, apparently. They canceled my account and doubled my insurance monthly rate when I tried to correct the issue.
And all on Veterans Day. Special thanks to Andrew in customer service who was not helpful at all about it. He has the ability to help by contacting the processing department and refused to do it for reasons unknown to me. It seems more reasonable to double a veteran's insurance rate than to help a veteran due to a clerical error.

I used the USAA online form to get a quote for auto and home insurance combined. However, when I came to the part to sign the contract, I received a message to call a specific number. The person who answered the call gave me a completely different quote than the one they had given me online. This is the kind of practice that makes me not trust the company. I currently have Farmer's Insurance, and at least they are honest in giving me quotes. I have been with them for quite a few years, and no one has been able to beat their prices or their service.

I have been a member since 1962. This is not the same company. The following happened to me twice: I had a car in storage in Florida. I called to take it out of storage and drove for three weeks, unknown to me, still being in storage. This time I called twice to ensure it was out of storage, yet it still was in. I drove for six weeks with minimal insurance. Scary! The agent I dealt with fixed it up, but this incident was unprofessional and dangerous. Fortunately, we were accident-free. Not the way to treat a veteran or anyone.

I have been a loyal USAA member since 2013, coming from a proud military family who has trusted this company for generations. I've noticed significant declines in service and responsiveness. Sadly, my recent experiences show that USAA is losing the sincerity and reliability it once stood for. Communication during my claim process was poor, with repeated calls and voicemails left unanswered. My home insurance was also changed internally without explanation, causing unexpected premium increases, and although one year was corrected, previous years were not. Even simple updates to auto insurance have become unnecessarily difficult, especially for veterans and active-duty members. USAA used to be known for its genuine care for military families, but lately, it feels more like dealing with a typical corporate insurer than the organization that once truly understood us. It's sad to see USAA moving away from the sincere, pro-military values it once represented.

As an Army Veteran who was stationed at Ft. Sam Houston, I heard such wonderful things about USAA. I joined later in life without researching and assuming they were the bank everyone raved about. The insurance they provide was supposed to be the best. Now, I have been involved in a unique accident, and all I get from them is that they will provide the least amount of support. Gronk tells us every Sunday during the NFL commercials how he wished he could be a member. To be honest, he is lucky. Not serving will keep him from disappointment. If it takes a civilian to sell veteran and active duty military a product, a red flag has been raised. I will post more when I make it through the process.

I've had USAA for 30 years, never been very impressed. I've only stayed with them because I can get high insurance coverage, at generally the best price. Don't let the whole military thing fool you; they don't really care. They use that as a tactic to draw all the military members in. Let's face it; they are an insurance company, and they profit by not paying out.
If you do get into an accident, they don't really do anything for you. They basically make you do all the work with the other insurance company. If the other insurance company is slow or not paying, they don't care. Even if they pay you out and try to get the money from the other insurance company, they make you do all the legwork. This is their business, but they make the consumer, who doesn't know about the insurance business, do all the work and get all the runaround.
Sadly, I'm so disappointed with USAA. Most people have USAA because of the military or family tradition. You need to understand that you mean nothing to them. It's a business. They get rich by not paying out, just like every other insurance company. The sad part is, they play up that they care, but let's face it, they don't.

USAA insurance, in my opinion, has no clue how to process claims correctly. I had a flat tire and it separated, tearing up my fuel tank when the tire tore the filling tube off and broke the neck of the tank, exposing the fuel. It has been 14 days now, and they seem not to care, actually doing all they can to delay getting the tank replaced. They had me self-adjust for the first 4 days, and when they didn't like my work after many hours of following their instructions to find a mechanic that would accept USAA insurance and parts, and when I finally found a new tank but no mechanic would touch anything related to USAA insurance. One told me that USAA owed them $3,400. So, after all my work, they sent another adjuster to my house, and he stated my sending unit was leaking, not the tank. I sent pictures of the broken neck, but he did not want to replace my tank. After I complained about that, another adjuster, Randy Jones, decided the issue of whether or not the tank needs to be replaced should be determined by taking it to a mechanic to have them drop the tank and see what is broken. So, after 114 days, I am no closer to getting my truck fixed, with no rental car, an open fuel tank in my driveway, and just more and more delays. The latest adjuster said that even if my tank is broken, he is not paying for a new one but found a 23-year-old one in Ada, OK, for $100. I researched used fuel tanks, and their lifespan is only 20 years, after which they have to be replaced. A new tank is $1,400 more, but he said that previous adjusters had allowed way too much money, and he will probably want $300 back. All this when they haven't replaced the tank yet. Also, they only wanted to do paint and body work where the tire damaged the bed of the truck, and several body shops, not mechanics, stated that there is no way they can match the paint to the rest of the truck, so I had to pay, out of my own pocket, to have my whole truck painted. In addition, they refuse to pay for a rental car, and I am paying them a lot of money. Stay far away from this insurance company. I can send my research on the technology behind polyethylene and cross-linked polyethylene if interested.

My car was in a hit-and-run accident, so it was not my fault. USAA sends you to a "captive" franchised body shop, which then proceeds to give you a low-ball estimate, which is the estimate that USAA pays on. In my case, it was a third of the actual cost at my preferred body shop. As they were taking the car apart, they found hidden damage and submitted a supplemental to USAA. It has been two weeks since the supplemental was submitted and there has been no action on the part of USAA. When I called the assigned adjuster, his voicemail says he is out of the office until January 6, 2026! He left a phone number for the person he says is his supervisor, yet USAA says that the extension in his voicemail doesn't exist. Awful, just awful.

I wish people would read these reviews before they choose the insurance company they choose. But people usually just go with price first and then just hope they don't get in an accident, or need their help. USAA not only neglects their own customers when they need help for the service they have already paid for, but they lie about their quotes to "potential" customers. According to these reviews, they fail in every department.

To file an SR-22 certificate in California, purchase at least the state's minimum liability car insurance coverage. The insurance company will file your SR-22 with the California DMV on your behalf.
More specifically, if you're applying for a new policy, indicate on the form that you need an SR-22 certificate. If you have an existing policy that you need to change, contact your insurance company to let them know, and proceed from there.
Drivers must keep their minimum-insurance certification active with the state for 3 years to fulfill California's SR-22 insurance requirements. As long as you maintain your policy, your SR-22 documentation stays active. But your insurance company is also required to notify the state if you cancel your policy or allow it to lapse prematurely.
How to file an SR-22 in California
Compare SR-22 car insurance quotes.
Buy a car insurance policy that covers California's minimum insurance requirements.
Contact your insurance company about getting an SR-22 certificate.
Maintain your policy for 3 years.
You will need to maintain your SR-22 insurance even if you move from California. In that case, you would need to get an insurance policy in your new state and have the insurer file an SR-22 certificate for you. If your new state does not require SR-22 certification, you can buy the legal minimum insurance in that state to avoid having your license suspended while transitioning to your new state.
Once your new policy is in place, California considers you to be abiding by your SR-22 requirement. However, if your California coverage lapses before you have a new policy, the clock resets. In that case, California will inform your new state that you're in violation of your required SR-22 period.

Full coverage car insurance from USAA costs $2,802 per year, on average, and is more expensive than a liability-only policy since it provides more coverage.
USAA insurance rates go up by an average of 44% after an accident. Drivers who have USAA accident forgiveness will not see their car insurance rates go up at all after their first accident in 5 years, however. Even if the accident can't be forgiven, it will only affect your insurance rate for 3-5 years, depending on your state.
The exact amount that premiums go up after an accident depends on a few factors, including...
