Despite its name, Auto-Owners offers a wide variety of coverage options for dwellings, including homeowners, condo, renters, and mobile home insurance. Customers can also save with a multi-policy discount if they have two or more types of coverage with Auto-Owners.
Auto-Owners’ homeowners insurance includes coverage for:
The dwelling itself
Any detached structures on the property
Personal liability
Injuries to others that occur on the property
Personal possessions, even if they aren’t in the house itself at the time of a loss
Expenses if policyholders need to stay elsewhere after a covered loss
Besides coverage that is automatically included, Auto-Owners offers many optional add-ons. For instance, customers can choose to add equipment breakdown insurance, identity theft expense coverage, or special personal property coverage, among others.
Bottom Line: Is Auto-Owners Insurance a Good Company?
Auto-Owners is a pretty good insurance company, with fewer customer complaints than average. It’s a good choice for drivers who want to interact with an agent rather than purchase a policy directly from a car insurance company and manage it online. Auto-Owners also boasts many other types of insurance as well as optional car insurance add-ons.

The worst insurance I have ever had. I was locked out of my vehicle and I called my provider to know the estimated time. "He said it's 20 minutes," and then I waited for 30 more minutes but didn't receive any calls. I gave them a call back and suddenly the estimated time became 1 hour. The worst service. 👎👎👎

I am writing this review as a long-standing customer of Auto-Owners Insurance to detail a severely negative claims experience following a hit-and-run incident. I highly recommend potential customers rethink using this company based on the lack of support, communication issues, and unprofessional handling of my claim. Date of Incident: March 26, 2024 The Incident: My 2016 Corvette, in perfect condition, was struck by another vehicle while legally parked in a designated spot. The driver, an 85-year-old woman, fled the scene. A witness fortunately left a note with the vehicle’s license plate number. Failure of the Adjuster (Gina Marcantonio): Upon contacting Auto-Owners, I was assigned Claim Adjuster Gina Marcantonio. Her handling of the claim was entirely inadequate from day one. * Refusal to Investigate: When I provided the witness's note with the license plate number, Gina dismissed it as "not a serious thing" and refused to use that information to identify the at-fault driver. * Independent Investigation Required: It took me over a month to perform the adjuster’s job: I identified the driver, found her address, located her insurance information, obtained the police report, secured body cam footage from the detective, and even found video of the incident. Without my independent work, Auto-Owners would not have been able to pursue subrogation (recouping damages). * Misinformation Provided: Before my car even went in for repairs, Gina provided false information to the at-fault driver's insurance adjuster, stating my repairs only amounted to $2500 and that I was "fully paid." This directly caused delays and issues with the other insurer making their payments. The Repair and Payment Dispute: The total cost for the primary and secondary damages verified by the repair shop was $7159.45, which I paid entirely out of pocket in good faith that my insurer would reimburse me. Despite the shop manager speaking to Gina multiple times to confirm that all damages were related to the accident and that I had paid in full, Gina continued to insist I would not be paid the full amount. The shop manager even called her while I was present to verify that I was a customer and had incurred the full expense. Failure of Leadership and Executive Team: When standard channels failed, I escalated the issue to management. The response was dismissive and unhelpful. * Chris Khavari, the Claims Department Manager, explicitly stated that "nobody in the company cares" and that he couldn't be told what to do about this injustice. * I contacted multiple executive office members (Lynette, Garry ext. 55540, Amber Senken, Sydney ext. 55539, and Ali ext. 59265). Every single contact lied, changed their story, and refused to honor my legitimate claim. Conclusion: Instead of thanking a long-time client for doing their investigative work for them, Auto-Owners has ripped me off, lied to me, and refused to pay for damages I am entitled to under my policy. This company demonstrates a shocking lack of accountability and customer care. I strongly advise against trusting them with your assets.

We just settled a water damage claim with Auto-Owners. Kim Kinard was our adjuster, and I can't say enough good things about how she made the experience stress-free. As a first-time claimant in over 30 years, I am very pleased with how easy it was. At no point did we feel ignored or brushed off. Throughout the repairs, whenever something unexpected popped up, there was no squabbling or back-and-forth with coverage; Auto-Owners simply accepted it. I've seen numerous negative reviews, but I can clearly state our experience was very pleasant and would highly recommend Auto-Owners as an insurance provider.

We have our auto and home insurance covered through Auto-Owners. Recently, we filed a claim due to a broken drain pipe, which ran under the garage floor, through the home foundation, and across the front lawn to the main drain. Yes, it was not a pretty sight. I contacted our agent, Detlor Belleville, and they suggested filing a claim. We did, and the services provided through Auto-Owners and our agent were great. The entire project/claim was covered, minus our deductible. Outstanding Services and Coverage!

We were insured through Auto Owners and had a claim due to a "spongy" floor in our 5th wheel camper. According to the dealer, whom we took it to, the damage was caused by a leak at the rear of our refrigerator. This is something we would never have known was happening until we noticed something amiss with our floor. That is what we were told by the dealer, and Auto Owners was informed of the same. Not only were we talked down to by a third-party employee named Eric, he practically called us dishonest and stated he would not accept the word of the dealership that was repairing our camper. Eric, who works for an appraisal company, was hired by an Auto Owners agency out of Lapeer, MI, to come out and assess the damage to our camper. We were actually insured with Auto Owners through Duncan Insurance Agency in Armada, MI. Our insurance agent, nor the agency he worked for, supported us, and then Auto Owners hired an appraiser, who was dismissive, and disregarded the word of the dealership, relying solely on what he (Eric) declared. Beware when dealing with Auto Owners. They may have a good rating with the BBB, but their customer service is terrible. I have had insurance all my life, with full coverage on most things, and at age 65, I have had fewer than a half dozen claims in my entire adult life. Shame on you, Auto Owners.

In July 22, 2025, my husband and I had an accident. The driver hit my vehicle while trying to change lanes and then fled the scene. He is insured by Auto Owners Insurance Company. On August 4, I spoke with a claim representative to whom I sent all the pictures, including the license plate number, one picture showing the driver trying to cover his face, and the traffic report. Four days later, Auto Owners Insurance Company sent me a letter stating "Liability Denial." I advise caution when dealing with this company.

Broken back window in my Ford truck. I paid the entire amount at a reputable glass repair shop, and they did a beautiful job for $744. I paid my deductible of $500, and Auto-Owners was to cover $244. This happened 6 months ago, and after submitting a claim and contacting them three times—once on my own to submit the claim online initially and then following up two more times—I have received no response from them. I don't think it's a good idea to have a policy with Auto-Owners. I can't recommend them since I never heard back, and I have since switched to Travelers Insurance. Could you imagine this scenario if you actually had a larger problem?

Terrible company. "Lie, cheat, and steal" should be their tagline. We were hit by an EF-2 tornado in February. We are still fighting to get our roof covered. Initially, they had an "adjuster" visit the house. He couldn't determine whether the damage to our brand-new roof (only 4 months old at the time of the storm) was due to wind damage. Really? It's 4 months old. After months of complaining and threatening, they sent an engineer to assess the damage (but only after I made a BBB complaint). The engineer determined that the damage was due to moisture under the underlayment and not wind. Really? How did moisture get under the underlayment when the existing roof was torn off and installed on the same day? Additionally, the report claimed that the winds that day were only 40 mph. Again, really? We lost more than 40 large trees. Some were easily 80 feet tall and 200 years old. If 40 mph wind can take down a tree, how did that tree become 80 feet tall, 28 inches in radius, and 200 years old? Not a single thing they have said or done has been accurate, honest, or in good faith. Never, I mean NEVER, trust this company. They are worse than thieves.

I drive an average of 2 times a week, driving less than 7,000 miles a year. I have no tickets or accidents. However, my insurance has nearly doubled in recent years. I pay $16.99 every time I get in my car. I used to tell people what a good company Auto-Owners was, but not anymore. Price gouging is what it is; greed. I never thought of giving up my license, but it's ridiculous what I pay. Auto-Owners blames costs, but it's greed. My son-in-law works for an insurance company, and he was bragging about the huge bonuses they received. I'm very disappointed with Auto-Owners.

I have had Auto-Owners insurance on my cars for years. I am a 75-year-old with no tickets, no claims, and excellent credit. I paid $2,800 in 2023 for car insurance, and now they are billing me $10,000 for 2024. They just lost this customer. I am taking my car insurance and home insurance elsewhere. This is truly age discrimination!

After 25 months of fighting Auto Owners on their bad faith, it has been proven that the 2018 code clearly states it is the manufacturer's guidelines that need to be followed. I am mystified how an insurance adjuster and his bosses do not know or understand the 2018 UBC Roofing Code. Finally, I asked every Auto Owners adjuster, including Terry Oliver, my adjuster handling my claim, his boss William Johnson, and his boss Matt Sawyer, if you now understand the 2018 UBC Roofing code regarding spaced decking—1/4 inch gaps are up to the manufacturer's guidelines, which require the decking to be a nailable surface—not Auto Owners adjusters' wilful ignorance of the code. They corresponded eight times that 1/4 inch gaps were nailable and denied eight times that decking was a code-covered item, insisting I pay $7,000 for code-covered decking. Without decking, the roof is sure to leak; there is no installation warranty or 50-year shingle guarantee. Really, Auto Owners, no pride, just cheap and greedy when paying claims, just stacking profits and leaving homeowners with roofs that leak. Auto Owners is an "accept all payments, deny all or major parts of claims" insurance company. State Farm never did this to me. I was trying to save money with Auto Owners—great plan until you have a claim. They put me through heck, lied and lied, and were professional at covering up one another, and explaining 'nailable' as just not covered. They finally paid for decking after it was rubbed in their faces with the 2018 Unified Building Code, which every state, county, and city uses. Oh, that did not work, Auto Owners. After 22 months, you insisted I had to get a letter from the City explaining and approving the decking as required by city code. The zoning department does not send out insurance letters, but I am civic-minded and know the city and got the impossible letter. Only then was the decking approved, which only took 23 months and 500 hours for me, probably only 1 hour to say no eight times. Decking is normally approved by insurance with just a few pictures and one phone call. Auto Owners is refusing to pay for decking, and it's code-covered by insurance.

DO NOT TRUST AUTO OWNERS INSURANCE. Auto Owners Insurance discriminates against seniors and individuals with disabilities by not paying claims and blaming injuries on your lifetime of medical records. Auto Owners Insurance has left me in financial, medical, and emotional ruin since suffering a traumatic brain injury after being rear-ended in a crash. My car is wrecked and was never fully repaired. I have no money for the needed surgeries or therapy.
