We are still awaiting a significant reimbursement on the LTC claim. My Mass Mutual claim agent, Daniel Duran, informed me they had all the required paperwork, yet we are still waiting for substantial funds. He has since left the company.
Since his departure from Mass Mutual, I have experienced excessively long waits on hold over the phone. It appears that no one is knowledgeable about the situation. Promised callbacks have not been fulfilled.
I will likely need to file a complaint with the state insurance department soon.
I advise against choosing Mass Mutual LTC, as my experience has been very unsatisfactory.

In 1999, I started a 403(b) with GALIC. In 2004, I went through a divorce. We had a lot of debt and the judge ordered each of us to pay half within 12 months. I contacted the salesperson who started the 403(b) to inquire about a loan. He encouraged me to take a $10,000 loan, saying I was borrowing it from myself and paying it back to myself. Unfortunately, I was late on a payment and missed a payment, so GALIC contacted me to inform me that I had defaulted on the agreement, and it was being reported as a distribution to the IRS. I blamed myself for the taxes and penalty I paid but was relieved to have one less financial obligation since I was dealing with emotional and financial issues. Twenty years later, I discovered that I didn't borrow the money from my 403(b). GALIC loaned me the money using my 403(b) as collateral. When I defaulted and it was reported as a distribution, they apparently didn't take the balance of what I still owed (about $8,500) out of my 403(b) to close out the loan. Instead, they kept it active and have been charging me 7.5% interest while my 403(b) earns 3%. They say I owe $29,500 on that $8,500 now. They were taken over by Mass Mutual, but they are saying the same thing. They are not behaving ethically. How was it a distribution if no money ever left my 403(b)?
During our initial conversations, they showed us what our projected income would be at retirement. In addition, hey showed us what our guaranteed cash surrender value would be and that we would not have to pay premium, because our dividends would cover it (which we have on recording).
Now, I’m 70 and ready to retire and cash out on our policy, but Mass Mutual is coming back to us saying that we owe THEM close to half a million dollars, because we didn’t pay our premium, even though we have it on record that this was them who told us to do it. Moreover, the guaranteed cash surrender value was ¼ of what was promised at the time of sign up. So, now not only have LOST what we thought we had to retire with, but they are saying we need to pay them.
If you are looking for a life insurance plan, look elsewhere. You won’t find out how crooked they are until it’s too late. If you are currently using Mass Mutual, look at your plan NOW, do not wait. Do not let them screw you over the same way that they did us. They are doing nothing to work with us or try to rectify their mistakes. They would not return my calls. It’s absolutely crushing for myself, my husband and for my family. WE are currently reporting them to all state and Federal agencies.
