My family has been banking with NWFCU for over thirty years. It has been a really personable experience; we know many of the tellers at our local McLean branch and many members of our extended family have now become members. It is easy to get a competitive CD and keep extending them to accrue savings. And I have used the NWFCU visa card in many different countries during stints abroad. Honestly, a great credit union.

Been a member for over 30 years since its establishment. They care more about their profits than their members. Don't bank with them. There are many other banks that actually support their members/customers. I will be closing out my account!

Member Service and Phone System is Frustrating. When you write a message in online banking, they take a long time to respond and then they tell you to call. What is the point of having secure online messaging if I have to call and wait through your extensive phone menu? Also, your phone system requires verification, which often fails, causing you to wait and verify again with a live person. I finally called someone and they said I would receive an email with a document to sign, which I never received. I don't want to call again and navigate the complex phone menu to inquire about the document. I sent another message through online banking and now I anticipate a lengthy wait for a reply. They need more proactive leadership overseeing member service, striving daily to improve and simplify the process for members. It seems they are complacent, not teaching service agents to understand that if a member does not want to call, they shouldn't be instructed to do so. Often, it's a frustrating experience when I have an issue and need help. While not all representatives are inadequate, some are quite proficient, the problem lies more with the ease of use. If you're going to offer secure online banking messages, allow us to conduct business entirely through this channel without having to switch to your phone system, email, or other forms of contact. I hope you're listening to your members; there are numerous complaints online regarding your service.

Thank you for sharing your concerns. We understand how important timely communication is. On review of your recent correspondence, we see that we responded to your emails within the same day and our promise is 1-2 business days for a response. Thank you for also sharing your experience with our phone system. We understand that this takes a few extra minutes to listen to the options. This is designed to direct members to the correct department without the need to be transferred. Verification (automated or via a representative) comes at the end of the phone option message and is needed to protect your account and personal information. We are always looking for ways to improve our system, we appreciate your feedback because it helps us improve our service.

I never had any issues with any car loan in the past. As soon as I traded in my car and got a loan with Northwest Federal Credit Union, I have had nothing but issues, partial information, and nonchalant representatives. As someone not in the insurance field, I did not know that insurance terms can have different meanings. When I got the insurance NWFCU told me to get, I didn't realize it wasn't sufficient. They wanted to add over $600 more a month to my car note. I corrected this. Then, when I called to make my next month's payment, the representative argued with me that I did not make last month's payment. I had to speak to someone else who said the same thing until she had to transfer me. It was then confirmed that my payment for last month was received, but I owed another $59 for the insurance mistake. The first representative I spoke with was young and seemed inexperienced. However, the female representative had a poor attitude, and it was apparent she dislikes her job. The last person I spoke with, who told me I need comprehensive coverage, failed to mention that I also needed collision coverage. He was able to explain everything. I do not understand why they give out incomplete information. I am a dentist, and I provide comprehensive care to all my patients. That does not mean I give comprehensive care but only look at one thing in the mouth. These people omit details because they assume everyone is in the insurance field, which is not the case. There is a blatant disregard for ensuring their clients understand. It's clearly an area where they need more training and empathy. If a dealership tells you that you were approved by this federal credit union, ask them to run it again for someone else. This place is not worth the hassle and the aggravation for people who have jobs and do not have time to do their own research. Do not trust this company to give you all the information.

Thank you for reaching out to us with your concerns about receiving incomplete information regarding coverage for your vehicle. Northwest’s insurance requirements would have been included in your loan documents, and we also send out several notifications by email or by paper mail to advise that the insurance needs to be verified. We also acknowledge that our representatives should have been more thorough in explaining insurance terms and requirements when you called for information. The issues you experienced with payment processing and the attitude of some of our staff members are not reflective of the service standards we strive to maintain. We take your feedback seriously regarding the need for better training and more empathetic customer service. It appears that in review of your interactions with us that this matter has been resolved; if not, please reach back out to us via a call to our Member Service Center at 703-709-8900 or via an online banking message.

I have had an account with NW for about five years. I stopped by this afternoon, close to 3:30 PM, to make a deposit. I was next in line and observed two tellers. The first one was counting money with the "closed" sign displayed. The second teller was assisting another customer. I also noticed two other ladies in their respective offices with customers. However, nobody acknowledged me while I stood there for over five minutes. Consequently, I decided to go to Truist Bank instead to complete the transaction. I don't like to complain, but this is food for thought. Rush hour traffic on Lee Highway starts around 3:00 PM. I strongly believe that more than one teller should be working at the counter to provide exceptional customer service. This is not my first negative experience at the Gainesville branch. The branch in Manassas does a better job. Perhaps some cross-training would be beneficial. Sadly, I will have to close my account this week. Truly yours, Mr. Rosa

I made the huge mistake of taking out a home mortgage loan with Northwest Federal Credit Union. They treat their borrowers worse than dirt. Their costomer service is worse than a nightmare. If you are late on your payments, by just one day, they will call you and threaten to have you arrested. Stay away.

Been doing business with them since 2017. At the end of paying off my car, they sent me an invoice detailing the amount due. Nowhere does it state that there is a past due payment. I received a call on February 3, 2025. They mentioned that my payment for January was reversed, but they couldn't tell me where the money I paid went. I spoke with Manager Dax, who gave a different story. He stated that the payment was for September, five months ago, and none of the notices they have sent out mention a past due payment. I went to the shared branch and made the payment. I'm not happy with how they are handling this situation. They wouldn't let an account go over 30 days without calling or sending a letter. The letter I received was dated February 13, 2025, but it indicates that it was for January, while he says the payment was for January.

Worst company to do business with I have ever dealt with. The company added insurance to my vehicle that already had insurance and charged almost $1500 a month for it. I sent in documentation, and they only partially removed the fee. I had to repeatedly call to get assistance. I was given the runaround and told that they were charging interest on the insurance too. Be careful who you finance a vehicle through. These people are hardcore scammers.

I have been banking with this institution for about 7 years or so, and I feel like they don't appreciate my business. The main reason I chose to bank with a credit union is for more personable service and to build a relationship for future financial needs. I have worked hard rebuilding my credit and have a decent score with good payment history. I'm gainfully employed and have had regular direct deposits with this institution for a long time. I have attempted to get an unsecured credit card twice now to no avail. Other credit card companies have extended credit to me, but NWFCU just simply won't! So why should I keep my money there and continue to do business with them? I am currently looking for other alternatives for banking, another small credit union that wants to help people thrive financially in the communities they serve.

Customer service is wonderful; they are some of the most pleasant people you will ever encounter. I started with them because their 5-year IRA CD rate is the best around. This is where the good news ends. It took almost two weeks to get my account opened, and it cost me $10 for some nonprofit. Then I had to fill out manual paperwork (about a 15ish page document) to open an IRA account. Their portal does not work well, so I had to resort to snail mailing the forms back. Another two weeks go by. The IRA account is finally opened. Okay, let's transfer money in—NOPE! They need another paper form. The process seems like something from circa 1970. I threw up my arms in exasperation and had them close all my zero-balance accounts—they are simply not worth all the effort for 30 basis points. I went to Discover Bank—had the IRA CD set up and funded in under 10 minutes.

Used Bill Pay software on 9/2. NWFCU apparently had software issues and did not tell anyone, because my bill payments never went through. I looked on the 7th, and called them. They said to enter them again. I would have ensured that a member for almost 4 decades would have his payments executed today. Instead it looks to my payees that I did not pay them until the 8th. I may have to look for another financial partner.
