Every time I come to this location for a transaction, something crazy happens! Two months ago, I came to change ATM cards because they didn't work. The bank's customer service lady kept trying to reactivate my cards, but it did not work. I ended up waiting five days for new cards. When the new cards arrived, they didn't work either.
Now today, I came to the ATM to attempt to use one of my cards, and the ATM outside of the location on 87th Street in Chicago's Chatham neighborhood has now swallowed my card. The ATM is saying, "Sorry, temporarily out of service," and did not give me my card back. Now I'm outside for 45 minutes, late for work, trying to get into the bank to tell them my card has been swallowed up. I knocked on the door, but the bank security will not tell the teller that my card was swallowed by the machine, stating I have to wait until they open. While I was waiting, I saw that somebody is working from the inside on the machine; I'm sure they found my card inside of it, but no one has come to the door to give it back. They're making me wait until the bank opens, literally making me late for work. I really dislike this place. It's always something here going wrong!

This institution took over the schools credit union I belonged to for over 30 years. Where I live, there's only one bank in town, and the hours were inconvenient. I began the process of opening an account at a new bank (F&M), which has four branches in town and one in the rural area I reside in. I changed my direct deposit and left $1,000 in the old account in case I had overlooked a bill in the transition to the new bank. This bank charged me $5! What an outrage. It seems they enjoy profiting at the expense of others. I am disappointed with their service and know of two other people who had negative experiences with this company.

I am so disappointed with this credit union. I have been a member for 23 years. I over-drafted $16. They blocked my account, even when I paid it. When I called and asked why, she acted as if she were the owner of my card, trying to tell me how to use my card. She blocked my card and said I had to deposit more money that she thought was enough before she would unblock my card. But my card is not in the negative. It's just not enough money in it for her. That is so wrong. I am leaving this credit union; 23 years, and this is how I am treated.

I have been a member for years! After having multiple accounts for myself, family and business, depositing money regularly, they have nothing to offer in the way of loans or services.basically holding your money and charging fees, when I did sit down for a loan the other inexperienced person messed up the paperwork, I'm leaving for a REAL bank

My doctor's office don't take Mastercard. Self-Help refused to send me a Visa or Discover card that I can use at my doctor's office. I Definitely Hate Self-Help Credit Union. I don't like Self-Help credit union. Ever since Self-help has taken over, I've had nothing but problems. And now, they want 2 change the way the card looks as well as assign a pin number to your own personal card. That isn't acceptable. I hate Self-help credit union service. They are extremely awful. Whoever designed the card & website needs to slap themselves 100x over. Please go back to using VISA. I HATE MASTER CARD SERVICE.

I moved from Charlotte to Asheville and switched my BB&T account to Self Help Credit Union since that's the CU the hospital I work for uses. I can not express how disappointed I am with that decision. After trying to open new accounts online I got an email saying they could not open my account because the couldn't verify my identity. With a new address, that was an acceptable issue. I went into the local branch with documentation to prove my new address and had to sit through the 45 minute process of opening a savings and checking account. Seven days later, I received my debit card with the incorrect name on it. I notified the bank and was told it was a typo and it was being corrected and I would receive a new card with the correct name. Seven days later, I received a new card, with the same mistake on it. This time I went into the bank, and was told it was really corrected and I would receive a new card. Before I received the 3rd card my, old card was deactivated leaving me no means to access my funds. Seven days later I received the 3rd card, finally with the correct name. I sent customer service a secure message through my online banking account after the first wrong debit card, I have yet to receive a reply to it (2 months later). Online banking with SHCU is a joke. You are redirected to a 3rd party to conduct bill pay and I still can't figure out how and when funds will leave my account. One time funds leave my account instantly, sometimes funds don't leave for 3 days. I can not tell how much money I have in my account without having to keep track like it's 1980. I'm currently waiting for my last direct deposit to hit the account so I can close it and go back to a real bank like BB&T.

I went to Self Help Credit Union about 2 years ago about a week before my daughters 18th birthday. I was tryng to kill 2 birds with one stone. 1. Teaching my daughter how the world of loans and paying back loans work 2. Getting the money to get my daughter a NEW automobile instead of me having to purchase a used one. From the second we walked into Self Help, I immediately knew that we came to the right place. The don't give you any hassles, extremely professional and personable. We walked out of there with enough money to buy my daughter a nice brand new medium sized sedan, and on top of that it was at an extremely fair rate. So back to mu daughter , she hasn't needed one payment from me and she's going to into her junior year. So if you need any type of loan or just want a good credit union for whatever purpose please give Self Help Credit Union a shot.

Self-Help merged with my local credit union that I had been with forever. At first I was skeptical that I would be able to enjoy the same services that I had grown up with, however, I couldn't be more happy. Self-Help lowered the amount of money I had to keep in savings in order to keep the account open, and lowered or eliminated a bunch of other fees as well. They also have a lot more branches in the area, which is incredibly convenient as I no longer have to travel out of my way to go to one particular one. I love their mission statement as well. All in all I would recommend this credit union to anyone.

Sometimes it feels good to give back to your community. Most people need a checking account or debit card in today's world. With that in mind, I'm happy to say that I have chosen one that not only benefits me, but also greatly benefits my community. Headquartered in Durham, North Carolina, Self-Help Credit Union is a non-for-profit credit union for people who need a little help getting going on their quest for economic responsibility. For those that don't necessarily qualify for the big banks or don't get the chance they deserve to prove their "credit-worthiness", Self-Help Credit Union is for you. They specialize in helping customers that are determined to repay their loans and help their community get the credit they deserve. They have a proven model where they focus on the consumer, not their credit score. They work with people who have big ideas and a desire to better their community. Don't feel put off if you aren't the ideal customer for one of the big banks. Don't be discouraged and let your dream of starting a small business wither away. Talk to a professional at Self-Help Credit Union and see how they can help you. With professionals catering to your specific needs, it would be hard to find a better credit union for your community needs. I recommend everyone give Self-Help Credit Union a chance.

I needed an auto loan after my prior vehicle had been in an accident. I decided to apply with Self-Help Credit Union and was approved in a timely manner. I have had my auto loan with them for going on three years. I have had no issues whatsoever with anything. The loan process was simple, the payment system always works and I am a happy customer. I would recommend this credit union for any of their services to my friends and family. Overall I am happy that I found Self-Help Credit Union and I will likely seek out more banking with them in the future. I am only rating 4 stars because I have not yet completed my loan and I do not know how simple the process will be in the remaining year of my loan.

I opened an account with Self-Help FCU when they were still People's FCU. I volunteered with one of their community outreach programs. The branch I use is the only non-check cashing financial institution in that neighborhood. They are a non-profit that focuses on offering financial options to the unbanked. I know all the tellers. They are friendly and ask about my day every time I go in. I know that they, unlike so many banks and even other credit unions, give back to their community. Like most credit unions, the hours are more limited, but it is a worthwhile trade to know that my money is with an organization that is in line with my personal beliefs about community involvement and service.

I have been using the location on Spartanburg Highway since 2006, before it was taken over by Self Help Credit Union. I had been using the same credit union since I got my first job. It was for the employees of GE, and when they laid off people they closed it down. I was pregnant with my first child and the hassle of finding a new bank had me worried. But the people at the credit union were nice and made the whole thing quick and easy. When they were taken over by Self Help they kept the same employees, which is the reason I have not switched banks. They know all the customers names, are sweet to my children, and when I go in on my birthday, they have some pop up or something that reminds them to say “happy birthday”. I'm not a fan of the new fees, but I have looked around and found that they are on par with most other banks. I guess I was just spoiled with the way they used to be. They explained the new fees very well so that they are easy to understand.

I have had a wonderful experience with Self Help. I have a checking account and savings account with them. Their fees for overdraft protection, money orders, etc. are considerably lower than the major bank I switched from. Whenever I go in the representatives are incredibly helpful, even following up with me personally after I had some debit card troubles. They are part of a large credit union network which gives me many options for free ATM use all over the country. The ubiquitous “Cash Points” ATMs all over North Carolina are included. Their lending practices designed to help the community are a bonus.
