I have to agree with the reviews here, Stillwater is disappointing. My first encounter with them involved them sending a contractor to inspect the house. I was called down from my office because my wife noticed someone on the property and took a picture of her napping through the living room window. Confused, I peeked outside the office window and saw an unmarked black van blocking, not pulled into, but pulled across my driveway entrance. I went outside and found footprints in the snow going around the side of the house and confronted the man. He was dressed in all black with no company insignia. I asked him who he was and how I could assist him before I considered calling the police. He explained that he was an inspector and so on. I informed him that he should knock, as we have dogs and observe castle doctrine. Taking pictures through my windows without prior notice could lead to a dangerous confrontation. However, if he had knocked, I would have offered him a drink and answered any questions about the house.
I called Stillwater to address this issue, and their response was, "You seem disturbed, sir. Are you threatening us?" I had to clarify multiple times that I was not threatening them but merely stating that their contractor's behavior was suspicious. He claimed he knocked, but footprints in the snow showed he did not approach the front door. They failed to address the issue of taking pictures inside my house while my wife was sleeping. They also refused to give me any advance warning but promised to knock in the future. However, they did not.
A year later, we received a very vague letter stating that our yard was overgrown and there was a branch over one of my buildings. I asked for specifics since this was from September, and they hadn't asked me to tidy anything up, even though it was now nearly the end of November. They offered no excuses besides, "It's just how our system works." I requested specific details on what was overgrown so I could address the issue, as well as parameters for the maintenance. All they provided were pictures of my planters, my in-construction garden beds, my cut lawns, and a few images that made it look like branches were overhanging the roof. In actuality, the trees have a clearance of three feet and do not touch the roofs of any of my buildings when examined up close.
When I asked for pictures of the specific areas that needed attention, they sent an email with all the pictures and no clarification. Worse, it was a no-response email, so when I tried to seek clarification, I couldn't. That was the final straw; they simply don't care.
However, it doesn't matter anymore. I'm fed up with how unreasonable this company is. They don't care to work with their customers; they just want your money. I'm grateful that we never had to file a claim, as it's clear that this company would not be supportive if we did. Their behavior is absolutely reprehensible. I've switched to Progressive. I hope to NEVER hear from this company again, good riddance.

Dear Mr. Collins,
We have reviewed your policy. As part of the insurance contract Stillwater reserves the right to inspect the properties we insure as necessary, usually on an annual basis. Since this is an outside inspection only, the inspectors often do not make an appointment with the homeowners. The most recent inspection in 2025 revealed your property does not meet Stillwater’s guidelines due to the yard being overgrown, and trees in contact with and overhanging the dwelling; for this reason, we sent you notice on 10/30/2025 that your policy would not be renewed. On November 14th and 19th , you communicated with us and were advised of what you would need to do for reconsideration: this includes photos of all sides of the property showing remediation of the yard including the yard being mowed and maintained as well as the tree limbs being removed and no longer overhanging or in contact with the roof. Your most recent email to us on 11/21/2025 indicates you have found other coverage and no longer have interest in a Stillwater policy.

If I could give it a one-quarter star rating, I would. This company is terrible. We had hail damage on our roof and instead of sending a person to look at it, they sent a drone. Then, they wanted to come back and not pay anything. Dropping them! Run from this company!

Hello. We are sorry we are not able to find your policy based on the limited information supplied by WalletHub to us. We typically investigate the policies and claims and respond to the feedback from our customers. Without the specifics of your claim, we cannot offer to contact the claims department and try to assist with a resolution or offer an explanation. We do utilize a professional third-party drone company to inspect properties that we insure.

Hello,
We were unable to find your policy based on the information provided in your review. However, the $80 is a policy fee that covers report ordering and other expenses we incur when renewing and activating a policy; this fee is nonrefundable in most states.

Stillwater Insurance put us in an impossible position. A claim was opened against our policy that was completely unjustified, and instead of investigating fairly, Stillwater chose to non-renew our policy. We were unable to secure new insurance due to the open claim and are now being forced to sell our home. Years later, the claim remains unresolved, despite us not being responsible for it. Proceed with extreme caution before choosing Stillwater.

Dear Mr. Collins,
We investigated your policy and claim to be able to address your concerns and comments here. The claim was reported to Stillwater by the person who was injured by your tenant’s dog. The claim was properly investigated and handled. The injured party is now suing you and the tenant. Stillwater is currently defending you and have tendered the claim and defense to the tenant’s insurance company. Separately, the nonrenewal of your policy is based on the fact that the property does not qualify for Stillwater coverage since we require a home to be owner occupied and a primary residence. While investigating the claim, we learned you have not occupied the home for several years. Your property does not meet Stillwater’s underwriting requirements. You did inform us that you will be temporarily moving to the property while you wait for it to be sold. Stillwater does not insure properties with short term occupancy. You have been advised to contact the State of California to inquire about the California Fair Plan.

My family was referred to Stillwater by an insurance broker, and we have been insured by them for both our three vehicles and home for seven years. Yesterday, my car was vandalized, and the culprits broke the driver's side window and damaged the windshield. I called their claims department and filed a report right away; however, after countless phone calls with many different representatives and three adjusters, there is still no clear instruction on where and how to get my car's window and windshield replaced. One adjuster claimed to have emailed instructions to the auto glass place, but nothing came of it.
The final phone call at 2 p.m. on a Friday ended with the representative saying they had all left and I would have to call back on Monday. I have to work, and my car is exposed to theft and the elements, and rain could further damage the interior.
What kind of insurance company does this? We've been paying them for seven straight years, but loyalty doesn't seem to count with these insurers.
Don't waste your hard-earned money with this company; they won't help when you are in need.

This is the worst renters insurance company I have ever come across. I had to call many times to check on the status of my claim, and after two months, I found out they invent all sorts of reasons not to cover my loss, which I specifically paid more for to include - electronics. Horrible customer service and shady policies.

One of the worst insurance companies to deal with. Had a claim due to a flood in the kitchen. They gave us a few thousand dollars, which would not pay for the flooring. More than a month later, we found damage to the cabinets. They claimed someone would come to inspect, but nobody ever showed up. They don't return calls, nothing. Today, 1 year later, they gave us a 30-day notice of cancellation because our roof was not good. It's 10 years old! Horrible people and company, stay clear!

Dear Mr. Johnson,
Your policy is not being renewed because the property no longer meets Stillwater’s eligibility requirements. We have determined this based on the physical inspection of the property that took place on 10/28/2024 which showed the main dwelling roof condition is unacceptable due to excessive granular loss, and the rear inspection was unable to be completed as we could not access the yard. Your policy will expire on 5/31/2025 at 12:01AM. A period of coverage remains to allow you time to replace coverage. In regard to the claim with 12/26/2022 date of loss, we issued an ACV payment on 4/25/2025 with a settlement letter; $308.40 was held back for recoverable depreciation and the settlement letter stated “To collect the amounts payable under these provisions, "you" must complete the repair or replacement and submit the documentation of "your" expenditures to "us" within 2 years of the date of loss.” You contacted us on 01/09/2024 inquiring how to obtain the recoverable depreciation amount and were advised to send in all the receipts for materials and how many hours were involved in the repairs for review to determine the amount we would owe. We did not receive any documentation or communication from you since then. In the state of Washington, you are allowed 2 years from the Date of Loss to request recoverable depreciation that was held back and that period expired on 12/26/2024. If you have questions, please contact your agent.

Our house had a leak at the end of January and now it is the end of March and we have not received any payment for remediation or to get our walls and floors fixed. We can barely get a call or email back from the adjuster and have spent over $25,000 in remediation and received a quote for the repair of our house, and all they are offering us is $12,000, which is not even enough to repair just the drywall from the water damage. They won't let us speak to a supervisor, and the adjuster is consistently telling us he'll reach out and then necessitates us calling him multiple times a day to get an answer. It's been two months, and we still have open walls in our house with two young children, which is not safe. This is a ridiculous company.

Dear Laurie,
We contacted the claims supervisor assigned to your claim to address your concerns. We learned the building repairs ACV payment of $7855.81was issued on 3/7 but had to reissued due to the incorrect mortgage company being listed on the policy. The claims examiner contacted you on 3/10 to advise you of the new check being issued. Another payment was issued on 3/31/2025 in the amount of $11,651.74 for mitigation. We are reviewing and reconciling the estimate submitted by your contractor which exceeds our estimate by $5000. The claims examiner contacted you on 3/31 and left you a message regarding the above and included her contact information should you have questions while you await the arrival of the second check within the next 7-10 business days.

Dear Mr. Harris,
We have reviewed your claim file and communicated with the supervisor on your claim. We see she spoke with you on 2/4/2025, and let you know the payment is being reissued and expedited since you did not receive the last checks sent to you. You should receive payment within the next 7 days. The supervisor also advised how to submit proof of repair so that the recoverable depreciation that has been withheld can be claimed as well. We hope this resolves this matter. Please email the supervisor directly if you do not receive the check within the next 7 days. Thank you.

I have a landlord policy and have been trying for three days now to increase my Loss Assessment coverage. The first phone call said I had to put my request in writing. Emailed them and got a quote that my policy would increase by 74 cents. I had requested the change in my email so what's the problem? I asked if they needed the 74 cents before they'd make the change or what?? Day three .. they don't need a payment to make the change but when I pay the down payment for the renewal .. WHAT ?? Called again and no one can help me except underwriting and they only review emails once per day and close at 5 in an earlier time zone than me. So I get to play three ring circus for how long until they make this change?! Headed into day 4 now.. unbelievable!!!

These people are borderline criminal. My claim for storm damage from Helene is still unresolved due to repeated incompetence followed by literal criminality. First, they "accidentally" misclassified my claim, causing a lost month. Then, I had to get a new adjuster, who sent out a field agent who took next to no photos (their choice, not mine), so the adjuster said, "Well, I can't pay for anything since no pictures were taken" (obviously a lame scheme). Then, it took three months just to get my loss paperwork emailed to me to fill out and have notarized (the entire time they said my claim couldn't be processed due to no paperwork, which they weren't sending me, pretty convenient). Then, when I filed a bad faith claim with the Department of Insurance, the supervisor Charles Grant told me the reason I wasn't getting a callback was that I had filed a complaint, and they don't respond to requests for contact when a customer does that. (He really said this.) Then, when I shared this response with my local news, he has since attempted to annoy/punish me by having some lady from their "Special Investigations Unit" call me and say I have to schedule an "in-person interrogation because they have some concerns about my claim." I laughed audibly every time she said "Special Investigations Unit." These people are crooks, top to bottom.

Dear Mr. Brockman,
We want to help resolve your claim. We have requested additional documents from you, multiple times over the last few months. These documents, such as the Sworn Proof of Loss package, invoice for the tree removal, and photos are necessary to corroborate the loss and help us process your claim. Unfortunately, we have not received any of the documents. We provided our response to the SC Department of Insurance which included a detailed timeline of the contacts made and attempts to obtain the information required to make a determination about your claim. We will continue to monitor the claim for the requested information and review it as it becomes available so that your claim can be processed.

If we could leave a zero review, we would. We filed a claim for our Homeowners, and the adjuster told us about four weeks ago that he would send the estimate. Three weeks later, after eight different attempts to get an update, we still have yet to receive a response. It's unacceptable not to receive any response. So now we just wait as winter approaches and with a damaged roof!

Stillwater Ins is the absolute worst! Our homeowner's claim for a damaged roof & a cracked ceiling in the bedroom underneath it was opened 2 MONTHS ago and is still unresolved. The adjuster absolutely refuses to call us back after multiple messages were left on her voicemail. I threatened to file a complaint with the PA Homeowner's Insurance Dept which would open an official investigation into their business practices. We received a call yesterday informing us that a new adjuster was now assigned to our claim going forward. We'll see how this goes. We're worried about winter being right around the corner as well. Be persistent with your calls. The squeaky wheel gets the oil. And remember...everyone has a manager.
