No, the Platinum Card® airline fee credit does not apply to gift cards, nor can it be used for airfare, seat upgrades, or point transfers. The annual $200 Platinum Card® airline credit can only be used toward incidental fees on a single qualifying airline of the cardholder’s choosing (enrollment required). These could be checked bags and in-flight refreshments, among others.
While you can’t use the Platinum Card® airline credit for gift cards, the credit is still a valuable benefit. The only other downside is that unused credits do not roll over to the following year. You should also keep in mind that you can change your choice of qualifying airlines once per year, in January. Otherwise, Amex will use the same airline you picked previously. The first year, you can make your initial selection at any time.
