To open a credit card for your business, you’ll need to provide both personal and business information on the application, including your SSN or ITIN, EIN, business name and structure, revenue and contact details. As the name suggests, you do need to have a business, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you need to form an LLC or corporation. Sole proprietors, and other informal business types can also apply.
What You Typically Need to Open a Business Credit Card
- Your Social Security Number (SSN), which is used for a personal credit check, even for business cards.
- Your Employer Identification Number (EIN) or your SSN if you’re a sole proprietor.
- Legal business name and structure: LLC, corporation, sole proprietorship, etc.
- Business contact information, including address, phone number, and email.
- Estimated annual revenue or monthly expenses.
- Ownership details: you must be the owner or an authorized officer of the business.
Many business credit cards require a personal guarantee, meaning you're personally responsible for any debt if your business can’t pay it back. That’s why personal information (like your SSN) is part of the application. Some cards designed for larger or well-established businesses may waive this requirement, but that’s less common for startups and small businesses.
