A collection agency is a business or organization that specializes in pursuing payments on overdue debts. When individuals or businesses fail to repay loans, credit card balances, medical bills, or other financial obligations, the original creditor may hire a collection agency to recover the outstanding amounts. The collection agency then contacts the debtor and attempts to collect the debt on behalf of the original creditor.
Collection agencies may use various methods to collect debts, including phone calls, letters, and, in some cases, legal action. It's important to note that there are regulations and laws, such as the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) in the United States, that govern the behavior of collection agencies and protect consumers from unfair or abusive practices. If this happens, you might be liable for the cost of the collection agency's services as well as the outstanding balance on your credit card or loan. This does serious damage to your credit report.
A collection agency cannot lawfully use or threaten to use violence or other criminal means to harm you, your property or your reputation; use obscene or profane language; publish your name; list your debt for sale to the public; or place telephone calls to you or any other person without identifying himself or herself as a bill collector. If a collection agency goes beyond these boundaries, you have legal rights protecting you.
