People under 18 years old can’t apply for credit cards, and if you’re under 21 you also need to show that you have a personal source of income. It’s best to apply for a card as soon as you can so you can start building credit.
You can use a credit card before you turn 18 by becoming an authorized user on someone else’s account. Most major credit card companies don’t have a minimum age for authorized users, and you don’t need to apply. About 1 in 5 teenagers have a credit card as an authorized user on a parent’s or guardian’s credit card, according to data from TransUnion.
Once you turn 18 years old, you can compare the best first credit cards and apply for one that suits your financial needs.
