Yes, you need special insurance to drive for Amazon Flex. Most personal car insurance companies require you to purchase a rideshare add-on or a commercial insurance policy if you drive for a delivery company, and if you don’t disclose that you drive for Amazon Flex, your insurer may deny your claims and cancel your policy.
Insurance Options for Amazon Flex Drivers
- Purchase rideshare coverage from your personal auto insurance company, assuming it covers delivery driving.
- Switch to an insurance company whose rideshare coverage applies to Amazon Flex.
- Buy a commercial car insurance policy.
Amazon Flex does provide commercial insurance for drivers in most states, but the coverage is limited. For instance, once you accept a delivery request, the company will provide comprehensive and collision insurance, but only if you already have these coverage types on your personal insurance policy.
It’s also worth noting that Amazon Flex’s insurance only applies while you are actively delivering during your delivery block. Additionally, the insurance provided by Amazon Flex does not apply in New York.
