An eviction will never be listed on your credit report by name, but it could manifest itself if the landlord in question sends your debt to a collection agency. It would then be registered as a collection account on your credit report.
If you believe that certain items related to an eviction aren't supposed to be on your credit report, then you can submit a dispute with the credit bureau. You'll have to explain the error(s) in detail and provide evidence where possible. You can follow the steps listed below.
How to Dispute an Eviction on Your Credit Report: Step by Step
- Contact the credit bureau. You can begin the dispute process by reaching out to the credit bureau that produced the credit report with the collection account. You can do so online, over the phone, or by mail.
- Provide documentation. Your dispute will proceed more efficiently if you can provide information to support your claim. For example, items such as bank and credit card statements could prove that you did in fact pay the rent owed to your landlord and the collection account is in error.
- Wait. Credit bureaus must respond to disputes within 30 days of receipt, per the Fair Credit Reporting Act, although you could get a response sooner. If the credit bureau agrees with your dispute, they will remove or adjust the collection account. If they disagree, they will provide an explanation as to why no changes will be made to your report.
