Discover Checking Accounts Reviews
What's Your Rating?
Things Discover doesn't announce? Paypal, Venmo, and any money apps DO NOT work with Discover checking. The Zelle app that is on their own site DOES NOT work either, at least for months now (a warning pops up when you click it). They recommended Walmart Money Services to get external account money into account and it doesn't work unless they have chosen to upgrade your debit card to the tap card, which I haven't been given. I can't run to another bank fast enough.
The good things they used to do were they would never overdraft me, and they would never charge me a fee for something that didn't clear. My account was also over $170 due to someone charging something back on ebay but after 3-4 months during covid they actually mailed me a check so my account would no longer be negative.
The bad - I would only have maybe $30-40 in this account at a time to cover subscription fees like hulu, spotify, and so on. I had used it for instacart one day and something glitched in instacarts system which made them charge me $200 instead of $70 and I ended up being in the negative. Instead of helping me/covering the charges they charged back every single purchase including the valid ones when at the time there was money in the account for, and I randomly had to deal with 4-5 of my accounts being banned and explaining the situation to each one. This bank isn't the same anymore, it does super shady things and the one time that I actually needed to do a chargeback myself they pretty much told my to screw off.
I'd avoid this bank
Like holy ****.....how bad do you have to be to actually mess all of this up.
I received a email saying suspicious activity on my account and to call discover. I called to shockingly find out they closed my account. I asked why and they replied, “all we can tell you is a business decision was made”.
But wait it gets even more crazy, I asked where all my money went? They said, “in 60 to 90 days it will be mailed out to you”. Luckily I have money in another bank, but if I didn’t I would be late on all my bills! I would stay far far away from Discover!!!
I opened a Discover checking account around June 28, and they decided to close it on July 25 for "suspicious activity". I did absolutely nothing wrong, and now they won't return my money for 60 days. I cannot wait 60 days, who can? I called everyday between July 25 - July 29, and no one could help me get the money faster or even an explanation as to what happened. Someone told me I would receive a letter in the mail stating what happened (implying it would come before my money), but then someone told me today that letter would not come until my check came with it.
It is not benefiting them at all to hold it that long, meanwhile I'm the one suffering without my money.
Discover froze my bank accounts and is holding my money (and many other customers' money), based on "unusual activity", and I cannot connect with anyone at Discover to unfreeze my accounts (it's been over 21 days as of this review). Note that I have absolutely no online access to my accounts, and Discover is forcing me to call them to unfreeze my accounts. No one who I have spoken with can tell me why my accounts are frozen.
I called Discover back on the same day of the issue and subsequently every day since to speak with one of their bank security team members. The hold times are usually 2-3+ hours. Half the time, their phone system provides a message about high call volume and then just disconnects. Furthermore, I was able to get through two times to the bank security team, only to be told that their hours are 8a-12a ET, and that they were not available to help me, and that I would need to call back during those hours; Discover advertises 24/7 customer support.
I've placed over 40 calls in the past 21 days. I have spoken to a number of Discover customer service professionals, but they cannot unfreeze my account and tell me that I must speak with the bank security team. They will only transfer me and put me in the 2-3+ hour holding queue.
I've tried to get help via chat, Facebook and Twitter, but Discover either continues to post the same reply about calling the number listed above, or in some cases doesn't respond at all.
