Discover® Reviews
The WalletHub rating is comprised of reviews from both WalletHub users and ratings on other reputable websites. The rating was last updated on 01/30/2026.
Discover’s personal loans are some of the best on the market. They’re available nationwide; they offer the potential for low rates; and they don’t charge big fees upfront. Plus, the funding process is relatively quick, with the money available as soon as the next business day after approval.
The best part of Discover personal loans is their low cost. Discover has a 0% origination fee and a $0 prepayment fee. The only major fee they have is a $0 late fee. Discover’s loan APRs range from 7.99% - 24.99%. They’re not the absolute cheapest choice for people with pristine credit, as you can find lenders whose ranges start 1% - 2% lower. But the upper bound of 24.99% is relatively low in a market where APRs can reach up to 36%.
Discover isn’t explicit about what credit score you need to qualify for a personal loan, but the minimum is reportedly around 660. They do, however, provide a minimum income requirement: $25,000. And to be able to apply, you’ll need to have a Social Security number, though you can be either a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident.
Discover Personal Loan Review Highlights:
Discover personal loan rates:7.99% - 24.99%
Origination fee:0%
Late fee:$0
Funding timeline: As soon as the next business day
Loan amounts:$2,500 - $40,000. While that’s a decent range, there are plenty of lenders that offer bigger loans than that.
Payoff periods:36, 48, 60, 72 or 84 months. Many competing lenders don’t offer payment timelines longer than 60 months.
Customer satisfaction: Discover receives an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau and has an average user rating of 4.0/5 on WalletHub
Pre-qualification: You can pre-qualify for a personal loan on Discover’s website. You can also try out WalletHub’s pre-qualification tool to see what other lenders might pre-qualify you.
Co-signer policy: Unfortunately, you won’t be able to share responsibility for a Discover personal loan with another person.
Discover is a bank that’s known primarily for being one of the four major card networks, alongside Visa, Mastercard and American Express. But their personal loans shouldn’t be overlooked. The 0% origination fee coupled with low rates and high customer satisfaction makes them an excellent choice. Below, you can see how WalletHub rates Discover in our three major categories: Terms, Requirements & Application, and Reviews & Transparency.

I been with them for more than 20yrs until this happen i realized that they will rip u off the 1st chance they get. U don't want to deal with discover card because they will try to ruin your credit by charging you for things you didn't buy etc and they don't accept your disputes when you dispute them. U better off without Discover Card. Look I'm a card holder and I stopped using their card when I saw them take my money or allow them to ruin my credit. I had to pay them for things I didn't buy to keep my credit in good standings with other companies. They refuse to go to arbitration.

I have had a credit card with them for exactly 10 years and have always paid on time. I paid off my credit card back in August 2025. The remaining amount was interest fees ($31), so I assumed it was finally paid off, and I removed my auto-pay because they will take money out of your account even if there is no balance owed. I checked my account today (January 2026) and they have been charging me a late fee without notice, which amounted to $200 in late fees. I have not received any emails, any notifications in my mail—nothing about this. I called, asking for a one-time courtesy to remove these fees and I'd be happy to pay off my balance immediately, but unfortunately, they will not waive the fees. Shame on you, Discover. I have now closed my account as I can't bear giving this company any more of my money, as I am sure they have already made thousands off me throughout the years. They should offer customers a one-time courtesy on this, especially when there is no notification. Very sneaky and unpleasant. My mother is also canceling her card here because of this.

After six months, I received my deposit back and now it's an unsecured card. It's a great credit builder. If you're just starting off, side note: secured cards, where you have to make a deposit to determine your credit limit, are good in that they allow you to have a credit history. But you have to remember, for instance, if your limit is $500 and you make a purchase of $50, that's 10% of your credit utilization, so keep that in mind.

Discover offers some really nice perks, such as matching cash back for a year to start with, and although I haven't had a recent increase, I did get two automatic increases in about two years.

No better than the PayPal CC now and the antics I've heard about things like CareCredit. I've been a customer for over half a decade, with credit always in good standing—excellent, an increase in income, never a late payment, and I never exceeded 50% credit limit usage (I had a $8,500 limit). At 3 a.m., right after Christmas 2025, I received an email saying my credit limit is now $4,900. This demolished my credit usage from 48% to 90% and gave no reason. It literally said after a careful review of your account. What does that mean? My account is excellent! Oh, did I add I pay more than the minimum, sometimes upwards of $500 a month, and have paid balances down to zero multiple times? I had an authorized user and gave this card company so much money over the years (tens of thousands). I was genuinely shocked and, I'm not going to lie, hurt because it then destroyed my credit score (Credit Karma informed me three days later my score dropped 30 points due to Discover). I feel betrayed and honestly, victimized, and I don't want this happening to anyone else who, God forbid, may rely on this card. Thankfully, I did not and will be paying off my $4,000 balance in the next 30 days and closing my account. Beware! My card is the Discover It card, by the way, member since 2020, and luckily I've received much better cards since like Amex Gold and Citi Simplicity. You know who else are amazing? Bank of America and my biggest supporter, Venmo CC - those guys havent let me down yet and have shockingly good customer service and protection. Get any of those before you try anything with Discover; trust me.

Booked a room at a hotel. The room is a disabled room because my husband is paralyzed and can't walk. We paid for the room over the phone on our way to the hotel. Arrived at 2:00 am but couldn't use the room because it was upstairs and there was no elevator. Called back to get a refund and was refused. Called Discover to help us and they sided with the hotel. We still had to pay. Don't recommend this company at all. They are not there for their customers.

This is the worst credit card that I've ever had. I make monthly payments in full. A check was sent out in the mail before the due date around Christmas, and they have decided to cut the card off because the payment was a few days late in the mail due to the holidays. My daughter was not able to be seen at the medical check-up due to not being able to make the payment. Their customer service is absolutely awful, and on top of that, they reported it to the credit agencies for being a few days late. Discover should be ashamed of themselves for treating their paying customers so poorly. I will not be using this card anymore, as they are so unreliable.

If you get scammed by a fake company, they do not care if you have proof, and they will not refund you because you "authorized that payment." They also will not allow you to close your account, even if you have one penny in it. They will have to mail you a check for one penny. Absolutely ridiculous, and I do not recommend banking with Discover.

For over 20 years, I have received great service from Discover. I have always paid my account on time and have an excellent credit rating. Now, I will be closing my account after Discover charged my account for the same amount of $209, 45 times, when only once was authorized, and blamed the vendor. It took weeks to get most of the charges reversed, but 3 charges, totaling $627, remain. After each of four calls, the account representative assures me the issue is resolved, but the charges are still on my account and are now included in my November statement. I will either have to pay the amount or incur interest while I continue the battle. It is very stressful and disappointing that even speaking to a manager has not resolved the issue.

Secured card, and just about worthless for building credit. However, they do report on-time payments to 3 CBs, and your tradeline takes a tiny bump. Your score may go up 3-7 points over 2 years. However, you'll get your deposit back in 7-8 months if you pay on time and keep the balance below 30%. You'll never get a credit line increase, even if you pay it off in full every month. I went over 60% once while on a trip, and then paid it right off when I returned. No success. When you ask for a credit line increase, they'll bring up past late payments and negative marks from 4-6 years ago, despite their claim of an opportunity for a "fresh start". They'll issue a regular card after 7 years.
Well, I, as a recipient with whom I had been for several years, had been keeping track and had fallen into hardship. I had spoken to customer service support about my issues, asking for help and assistance and what they could do while I sent payment and refrained from using the card to get these payments down. Apparently, they can't work with their clients. I'm very disappointed to discover that they have been applying interest and fees on a recipient's account by going over the limits while I've been making payments. I feel that's just not fair to a recipient who has been paying on time and then gets slapped with this. If they were willing to negotiate or work with the recipients on trying to get the amount owed down, that would be great, but no! So, this rating is a two. It's very disappointing that credit card companies do this. I really appreciate your inconvenience.
