WalletHub’s proprietary 100-point rating system for banking products evaluates offers for each major consumer need the product is applicable to – from everyday checking to saving needs. More specifically, we identified 52 different types of banking needs that are representative of different users’ financial priorities and behaviors.
Given that each group has different goals and is likely to use their banking products differently, they have been scored differently, using different metrics. When a product meets eligibility criteria for two or more needs, it is scored for all relevant needs, but we will predominantly display the score for the need to which the product is best suited. For example, if a checking account offers no fees on international travel and has an average APY, the account will be scored for both “Everyday checking for an international traveler” and “Everyday checking with a high balance” (as checking accounts are most likely to offer interest on higher balances). However, only the need with the higher score will be featured, as the checking account would be more suited for that need.
To evaluate each need, WalletHub uses 20 key metrics grouped into three major components: Editor’s Rating, User Reviews and Market Comparison. The Market Comparison component measures how appealing the fees, interest rates and other features of a product are compared to a pool of over 2,500 banking offers monitored by WalletHub. Each component has a maximum number of points allocated to it, based on its importance as determined by our editors, and the points are added up for each product to create an overall rating with a maximum score of 100 points.
Ratings for each category reflect how close a banking offer is to WalletHub’s definition of a top-rated banking product, which is based on market conditions and what we believe are reasonable terms. We compare banking products to that standard to give a numerical approximation of how reasonable and competitive the offer is compared to others. If a product does not match any of the needs we defined, then it is not scored. For example, savings accounts are not scored for any of the “everyday checking” needs.
Below, please find a high-level version of the scoring rubric used to evaluate banking products and produce WalletHub’s ratings by consumer need. Please also keep the following notes in mind.
- Any metric for which we are not able to find data receives “N/A,” and it is subtracted from the maximum point total.
- We included penalty-point categories to account for specific shortcomings that banking products might have. These penalties subtract points from the total score.
- Penalty-point categories include "Available Only Online" and "Online Bill Pay Fee." Some checking and savings accounts are exclusively available online, lacking any in-person customer service, which can be challenging for consumers needing assistance. Additionally, some checking accounts impose fees for making online bill payments, which is a basic banking feature. To account for these limitations, we have introduced these two penalty-point categories.
- When fees or other terms are presented as a range, we use the midpoint for scoring purposes.
- “Annual Cost” is calculated for checking accounts by adding all fees (like monthly fees, overdraft fees, out-of-network ATM fees, etc.) and subtracting the signup bonus and interest earnings, if any. Negative amounts indicate savings. Scores are assigned linearly, with the lowest costs/most savings receiving the most points.
- "Annual Savings" for savings and money market accounts is calculated by adding the signup bonus and interest earnings over the year, then subtracting any monthly membership fees. For certificates of deposit (CDs), "Total Savings" is calculated as the total interest earnings over the CD's term. Negative amounts indicate higher costs. Scores are assigned linearly, with the highest savings/lowest costs receiving the most points.
- For each consumer need, we've made certain assumptions for calculation purposes, such as the average monthly balance in the respective bank account, the number of overdrafts per year, the number of ATM transactions per year, and more. These assumptions are based on extensive research.
