I pay for insurance so I can receive medically necessary care, not so I can fight constant denials for routine follow-up after major surgeries. The amount of stress, time, and energy I've had to spend appealing decisions is unacceptable.
Patients recovering from major surgeries should not have to battle their insurance company just to get basic care. My experience with Cigna has been extremely negative, and I would strongly caution others to look closely at how they handle claims before choosing them.
Horrible Experience After 30+ Years with Cigna
I've been a loyal Cigna policyholder since 1993, but after this recent experience, I’ve lost all confidence in the company.
In May, I received a notice that my premium would increase by over 50% starting in August. I immediately contacted Cigna on May 26, 27, and 28, making a total of six calls to try to change my policy. Each time, after lengthy verification, the representative would tell me they weren’t licensed to assist Hawaii residents and that someone else would call me within 24–48 hours. No one ever called.
The following week, I made three more calls but got nowhere. The questions during verification became ridiculous—asking if I lived in a house or condo or if my number was a landline or mobile. One representative even hung up on me when I asked for a supervisor. When I finally spoke with a supervisor, she transferred me to the dental department and promised a callback the next day—Friday, June 6th.
I did receive a call from Kimberly Bane, who said she was with Cigna and would resolve everything. After four hours on the phone, nothing was resolved. She said she’d take care of it by Monday. She didn’t call on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday. Nothing was fixed.
My wife and I had no choice but to cancel our plan and request a refund. We were told it would be processed in 10 days. It has now been 18 days, and we still have not received a refund.
She decided to go with Hawaii Dental Service, and within five minutes she was covered.
This company is disorganized, unprofessional, and not equipped to serve Hawaii residents. After decades of being with Cigna, this was an infuriating and disappointing experience. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone. Save money, get quality care, and go with Hawaii Dental Service.
The company that handles the payments (Basic) confirmed that they sent notice when the first payment was made. I called Cigna numerous times, only to be transferred to many departments, none of which had any idea about my situation. Customer service does not listen and seems to lack competence.
Basic sent the payment notification again today, and I suspect Cigna will claim they did not receive it. Save yourself the headache and stay far away from this company.
Cigna, you better look at your comments because apparently, your insurance company is inadequate, and you just need to reassess your business practices because you do nothing beneficial. Besides that, you do not support or provide efficient care. You do not give access to competent doctors, and the people you have answering the phones are disrespecting and berating customers. Cigna, consider restructuring your company for better performance because your service is currently unsatisfactory.
