As far as price, Nationwide car insurance is more expensive than most of its competitors. The company ranks in the bottom quartile in WalletHub’s price ranking study.
Nationwide’s car insurance coverage options are pretty basic, however, and their list of discounts is relatively limited compared to other auto insurers. But Nationwide does make it convenient to bundle auto insurance with other types of policies, so it’s a one-stop shop.
Nationwide car insurance is not available in Alaska, Hawaii, Louisiana or Massachusetts, unfortunately.
Nationwide Home Insurance Review Highlights
Nationwide offers both homeowners insurance and renters insurance, along with discounts for bundling them with other Nationwide insurance policies.
A homeowners insurance policy from Nationwide covers your home and personal property against damage from fire, weather damage and other risks. It also protects you in case of a lawsuit related to a covered loss on your property.
Similarly, Nationwide renters insurance protects your personal belongings from theft or damage. It also covers medical bills for guests who get hurt while visiting a property you rent and the cost of temporary housing should your dwelling need repairs.
Overall, Nationwide’s homeowners and renters insurance policies provide dependable coverage at a reasonable price.
Bottom Line: Is Nationwide a Good Insurance Company?
Yes, Nationwide is a good insurance company, earning a rating of 2.6/5 from WalletHub. In addition to solid auto insurance coverage, Nationwide offers a wide variety of insurance products for individuals and businesses, as well as banking/investment services and retirement plans.
Some of Nationwide’s most interesting features are its highly rated mobile app and free On Your Side® annual assessment, where an insurance professional reviews your existing policies to ensure you are adequately protected. However, Nationwide could offer more in terms of coverage variety. To learn more, check out WalletHub’s complete Nationwide Review. You can also read some of the reviews from other consumers below.

Nationwide is not on your side. They’re for themselves, along with a lot of these other insurance companies. It’s all political!!! Freedom of speech & truth moment.
I was involved in accident, which I got hit by one of their insurer individuals. Several months ago . Ohhh, Not to forget to mention the vehicle that hit me happen to have an off duty officer in the vehicle as a passenger. I didn’t have a fair chance in the beginning. My rights, codes & laws were violated. They didn’t care, I couldn’t even get enough respect for fair appeal. When providing them with explicit evidence that the accident did not occur the way it’s implemented on fabricated crash report(s). Which!!! Happened to be revised five times. But.... Still, I can’t get a fair appeal, they don’t even have a statement from me. Police didn’t get a fair statement from me until weeks later by email. So how was a fair and equal investigation did without a full statement from me? Where’s the witness statements? Where’s the witnesses? Why are there five crash reports? Why can’t I get a fair chance, better yet an appeal? Why???? Everybody in cahoots.... SMH, I’m being accused for something I wasn’t negligent of. As, drivers we sure the same rules & Traffic laws of the road. I guess in this situation, it’s all about who you know????♀️. I was injured, and didn’t have a fair opportunity to get medical attention. Better yet offered, but the opponents of the vehicle that hit me was offered & evaluated. ( According to: fioa footage) I didn’t even know paramedics arrived.
Beware and always review insurance companies profile. Since we’re kinda force to have car insurance. I’m very disappointed & unsatisfied with this whole process.

I was with Nationwide for over ten years and I never had an accident. My insurance agent didn’t notify me that if I didn’t make a payment they would cancel my contract. Supposedly it was a renewal period. They dropped me and issued me a refund from their wrong calculations on my payment and then sent it to a wrong account which they kept saying was mine. The card they sent it to was not mine and then they assumed I had someone else pay it when I kept telling them that it must be an error in their end. For 33.00 they refused to send me a check because they said they already sent it to the bank account which I consider fraud. I feel they have just taken my money for all these years and I don’t recommend ever using them. I went with progressive and I pay almost two thirds less than what I did with nationwide.

@Motivationalplus01 I was a victim of a hit and run back in November, and despite the police report that stated otherwise Nationwide labeled me at fault and double my premium. Up until then, I had been with Nationwide since 1988. Never again will I deal with them.

Nationwide messed up my roof, and after 9 years, when I asked them to correct their mistakes, I was told no unless I could provide proof that they were wrong. They also messed up my car insurance, charging me for years for full coverage on a vehicle that I own and do not need full coverage for. When asked about it, they said they'd reduce my monthly payment to around 300 dollars a month. A week later, I received a letter stating they were raising my monthly payment to over 550 dollars a month. When asked why, they still haven't answered my question. So, I'll be replacing them. They don't care about their customers.

When I was retiring from the City of Aurora I had over 600 hours of unused sick time. Nationwide sent me a letter offering a Post Employment Health Plan (PEHP). The letter clearly indicated that I would be able to use funds associated with my unused sick time to cover my out-of-pocket medical expenses. I decided to participate in PEHP. When I sent them some medical bills for reimbursement, they replied saying that my plan was for reimbursement of health insurance premiums only. This means that Nationwide was lying to me about reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses. Their motive is clear: they want your money, and they want to keep it for as long as possible in order to use it and make a profit off your money. Talking to Nationwide representatives was a complete waste of time. They imitate understanding and quick actions, but in reality, they have no intention and do nothing to help you. My last communication with Nationwide was when I sent an email to Michelle Escobedo asking her to provide copies of some documents. She simply ignored my email. Before that, in her last email to me, she stated that (Quote) “The way PEHP is funded using only sick and/or annual leave, the IRS will only allow for the plan to reimburse health care premiums. This is an IRS rule” (End of quote). Only three scenarios are possible here. (Let us not forget that the Nationwide letter stated that, while participating in PEHP, I would be able to get reimbursed for out-of-pocket medical expenses.) Scenario 1: M. Escobedo was right; the IRS rule did not allow reimbursement for out-of-pocket medical expenses. This means that Nationwide grossly violated the IRS rule when, in their letter to me, they indicated reimbursement for out-of-pocket medical expenses. Scenario 2: The IRS rule allows reimbursement for out-of-pocket medical expenses, and M. Escobedo knows about it but she states the opposite. This means that M. Escobedo is a liar. Scenario 3: M. Escobedo is an illiterate, unprofessional employee. Here is some information for her. (Quote) “IRS rules for Post-Employment Health Plans (PEHP) confirm they are tax-advantaged arrangements, structured as a VEBA trust, for employees to fund medical expenses after employment.” (End of quote). I hope M. Escobedo’s logical abilities will allow her to understand that “medical expenses” is a very broad concept that fully includes the narrower concept of “out-of-pocket medical expenses”.

Dear Nationwide,
I did the smart thing by insuring my pet. You promised in your advertising that if I did so, you wouldn't cancel or raise rates just because my pet gets sick. My kitty developed cancer, and yes, you covered me as promised, but the next year you tripled my rate. The year after that, you canceled my plan, forcing me into a plan that covers my kitty for less than a fifth of what was originally covered, calling it "migrating to similar coverage." Nationwide is not on my side. You deliberately penalized me for having an animal that contracted a severe disease. Your promises were misleading, and you never gave me any options besides downgrading me to your most minimal coverage. For anyone considering Nationwide, I advise you to steer clear. This is a complete bait and switch regarding insurance coverage, and they don't pseem to care about you or your animal's needs. Now I'm left with very little to cover my animal's healthcare needs.

Nationwide is not on your side at all. I was with Nationwide for two years, with no accidents. Then, I was involved in an accident when an e-bike hit the side of my car and caused damage to my vehicle. Edward C. Bokern II, the adjuster for Nationwide, came out to my work for the claims adjustment. He was aware the side-view mirror was pushed backwards and had damage. After the adjustment, he denied the repairs. He is not a reliable adjuster. Be sure to record your conversation with Edward C. Bokern II. I did not find out I had been charged for the rental car, rented again due to the side-view mirror not being repaired, until later. There was no email, no text, no call — no communication. Nationwide is a terrible insurance company. I would never recommend anyone to insure through Nationwide.

When I returned from vacation, my basement had five feet of water in it. We filed a claim, and the adjuster visited. Since that day, I have been calling, emailing, and texting without any response from him for 28 days. I even tried contacting the supervisor, but I haven’t received a call back in three days. We had to pay out of pocket to install a new boiler and electrical service so we could continue living in the house. I sent these quotes to the adjuster on the second day. This situation is unacceptable.

Can't get through to a live representative; I've tried to call half a dozen times. Their automated system won't register answers. The online and app versions make it very difficult to pay. The policy went past due because I couldn't pay or reach anyone. Then after three more call attempts, I finally got through to a very rude young lady who was particularly mean about my letting her know the systems weren't working. She wanted to know the exact times and dates I was trying to log in online. I told her I clearly didn't have that information as it's been over several weeks, and she continued to say if I had paid my bill on time, then I wouldn't have had a problem. When I told her I was having the problem before that, she kept talking over me, so I just hung up on her. Terrible customer service.
We had to switch my fiance's policy over from his parents to us, and it has been nothing but problems since. They changed the owner to my fiance at least three different times (because the previous attempts didn't work), and kept sending mail to his parents even after the owner's address was changed. I will never personally get a policy through them. Every other insurance company I've ever worked with is much more accessible and user-friendly.

"I have been with Nationwide Insurance since 2016. My vehicle is nearing the end of its insurance policy. Tim, who doesn't make the rules, dutifully rejected my request to cover the costs for a rear axle repair. His reason, according to the Hyundai Service agreement, was that I was unable to provide proof of service, specifically an oil change in 2023. This is a warning to anyone who gets insurance with Nationwide: as soon as your policy is near its end, they may reject maintenance requests.
My car has been very well cared for. I have changed the oil every year, except in 2023. Tim didn't like my tone because I stood up for myself, and he rudely ended the call. He refused to understand that 2023 was a financially tough year for me. When a vehicle is driven less, oil changes aren't always necessary because the oil can stay cleaner for longer. My car is in excellent condition and passed a recent diagnostic test, but because of Hyundai's policy, the client—me—is penalized for missing one oil change.
I find this move by the organization to be frustrating and unprofessional. A warning to car owners: make sure you change your car’s oil regularly, though every 6 months may be an unreasonable request because people drive different mileages in a year, and frequent oil changes can have excessive environmental impacts. It seems this company is not in it to protect clients or the planet; they just want your money.

Representative hung up on me. I called to ask about insurance for my snake who HAD a respiratory infection, which has since been resolved. He told me it counts as a pre-existing condition and I would not be able to submit a claim for a respiratory infection for six months, but tried to get me to sign up anyway for "other possible reasons to go to the vet". When I explained that there were no other reasons I'd need to take my snake to the vet, and asked what the point would be in signing up now, rather than waiting six months, he hung up on me.

"I used to love them, but now you get what you pay for. They are still cheaper than others, but the quality and customer service reflect the lower price. Getting a hold of customer service is frustrating, and when I finally was able to get someone, I was told that the private company that wrote my policy has opted not to allow the corporate customer service to offer help to individual policyholders. Instead, I have to call the local policy writer. So, I call the local policy writers, only to be told that they cannot see all of my information and have to get back to me after they call the corporate number. They do call me back and ask me to send them screenshots of where payments have come out of my account to Nationwide.
It has basically become a go-between, feeling like a game of he-said-she-said. They call corporate, then call me back and tell me what they were told. Why couldn't I just call corporate myself? On top of this, the claim department is a real joke. I paid for full coverage on my truck for more than 10 years without any accidents. Then someone hits my truck, and I try to make a claim. The only option I was really given was to total out my truck and then pay them $2,000 if I wanted to keep it. No one came out to see my truck; I sent pictures. No one spoke to the repair people. When I called Nationwide, I was told it does not matter whether the truck is repairable or not; the formula they use put the truck at 75% damage, and they would not pay to have it fixed; they would total it. So they offered me $8,000 with a $500 deduction for co-pay and $2,000 deducted for me to keep it if I send them the title so it can be marked as totaled. My truck is a 2004 GMC 2500HD 4x4 Duramax Diesel Luxury Edition that was in very good condition. All maintenance kept up and under 200,000 miles. It could not be replaced for the low amount they were offering. In short, the decision was made not to accept the offer from Nationwide and pay out of pocket to fix it. In Mississippi, it is difficult to have a salvage vehicle inspected by the DOT to allow the vehicle to legally be driven on the roads.

My income comes from a Nationwide Annuity Plan. The payment is late this month. I have tried repeatedly to get through to someone who could answer my questions. I also need to confirm that a recent change went through. Nationwide's computer system completely refused to let me speak to anyone. It didn't recognize what an annuity is, nor would it allow me to speak to someone about purchasing a policy. I tried several ways to get through, but was left stranded. I don't understand what businesses are thinking when they set controls so tight that they prevent both new and existing customers from contacting them. After all, if they lose customers, they will no longer be in business. Now I can't even select the type of product I have because the list I'm supposed to choose from DOES NOT INCLUDE ANNUITIES!!!
