I filed a claim after a sudden sewer line break caused sewage water to flood the crawl space of my home. This created hazardous conditions and led to secondary water damage, including:
• Moist drywall
• Damaged laundry room flooring
• Sinking concrete
• And required emergency mitigation
I removed the sewage water immediately to protect my family’s health, as the smell caused nausea and headaches. I submitted plumber reports, photos, inspection results, and a formal demand letter. My policy even contains an “ensuing loss” clause, which should have provided coverage for the secondary damages.
Despite all this, American Modern categorically denied my claim, citing wear and tear and refusing to acknowledge the covered aspects. I escalated to the California Department of Insurance, and yet they continued with copy-paste denials and avoided directly answering my arguments.
At one point, they even wrongly suggested that tree roots caused the damage, despite photos and a plumber’s statement confirming no such roots were present.
This experience has not only cost me financially — it caused severe emotional distress due to the unsafe conditions and gaslighting by their team. I’ve now been forced to seek legal action just to get fair treatment.
After 14 years of loyalty, this is how they treated me. Do not trust them to protect your home or your peace of mind. They are unresponsive, misleading, and clearly put profit over people.
This year, they raised my homeowners insurance by 36%, which is outrageous. I contacted them for an explanation and got nothing but generic excuses about "market conditions." No transparency, no accountability.
Loyal, claim-free customers shouldn't be penalized like this. I'm actively shopping for a new company that actually values long-term clients.
I am unsure about this insurance company, as it seems as though they treat many of their customers this way.
Hopefully, I will be able to change to a better review if they uphold their promises in the policy.
The reason I didn't give five stars was because of one lady who wouldn't return my calls. I left three messages. I then went on to another person. I contacted my agent, and within a day, I had been told the amount, and in two or three days, it hit my account. No complaints here.
