You can overdraft your U.S. Bank account with a recurring debit card payment, ACH transfer, or check by attempting to make a purchase or withdrawal for which your account does not have sufficient funds. If the transaction processes, you have overdrawn your U.S. Bank account.
If your account has overdraft capabilities, U.S. Bank will authorize recurring debit card transactions, ACH transfers, and checks that would overdraw your account. However, U.S. Bank will not authorize any non-recurring debit card purchases or ATM withdrawals that would overdraw your account unless you opt in for this service. If you do not opt in, U.S. Bank will decline any non-recurring debit card or ATM transactions that would cause an overdraft, and your account will not be charged.
How to Opt-In to Overdraft U.S. Bank Account with Debit Card Purchases and ATM Withdrawals
- Call U.S. Bank customer service at 8008722657 to update your account’s overdraft settings. You’ll need to have your account information handy when you call, as well as any personal information that is required to verify your identity.
- Online: Sign in to your secure online U.S. Bank banking account
- Select "Customer service" at the top of the page, then choose "Self service."
- Select "Overdraft Options" within the "Deposit Accounts & Debit/ATM Cards" section.
- Select "Manage overdraft coverage for ATM & debit card transactions." It is found on the left side of the page, within the "I'd like to" menu.
- Choose "Change coverage", then review the page of disclosures. If you accept, select "Agree".
- Select the applicable checkbox, then choose "Submit."
- To add or edit, mark the checkbox next to "Yes, I want ATM and Debit Card Overdraft Coverage on this account." For changes, make the desired updates and select "Save.
- To remove, mark the checkbox next to "No, I don’t want ATM and Debit Card Overdraft Coverage on this account."
- Visit your local U.S. Bank branch. Speak with a banker to change your checking account’s overdraft settings. Use their branch locator to find a location near you.
Note that U.S. Bank charges a $36.00 fee each time they pay for a transaction that overdraws your account. You can be charged up to 4 overdraft fees per day.
It’s also important to remember that U.S. Bank pays overdrafts at their discretion, which means they do not guarantee that they will authorize a transaction that exceeds your account balance, even if they have done so before. To avoid overdrafts, consider signing up for U.S. Bank’s overdraft protection service.
