More specifically, the Platinum Card®’s 5 points / $1 flight bonus applies to airfare booked directly with the airline or through American Express Travel® (up to $500,000 spent per year). Prepaid hotel reservations booked on Amex Travel with a Platinum Card® card also earn 5 points / $1 spent.
The card’s base rewards rate is 1 point / $1 spent on purchases. In addition, you may be eligible to earn as high as 175,000 points for spending $8,000 on eligible purchases within the first 6 months (welcome offers vary and you may not be eligible for an offer; apply and, if approved, find out your offer amount and accept the card with your offer, spend $8,000 in 6 months, and receive the points).
Ineligible Purchases for the 5x Points Bonus
Car rentals, non-prepaid hotel reservations, charter flights, private jet flights, cruises, and similar travel expenses do not earn the Platinum Card®’s 5 points / $1 bonus. These bookings and all other purchases only earn 1 point / $1 spent.
Keep in mind that the Platinum Card®’s 5 points / $1 bonus rewards can take up to two billing cycles to post to your account.

Once you’ve met the spending requirement for the Platinum Card®’s bonus, the points will post to your account within 8-12 weeks. In addition to the welcome offer, the Platinum Card® offers many other benefits and extensive ongoing rewards.
