The point of a store credit card is to get perks like discounts, rewards, and financing offers from retailers you shop with frequently. Store cards can only be used with specific merchants, though they tend to be easier to get and are less expensive than the average credit card.
If you have fair credit, most store cards can be useful for building your credit score, as they’re typically available to people with scores of 640 or above and come with $0 annual fees. But you’ll get the most value out of a credit card from a store you already shop at frequently, as it can save you money on your purchases, too. You can compare the best store credit cards to see what suits your spending habits.
Many stores also offer co-branded credit cards, which are part of a larger card network such as Visa or Mastercard and thus can be used pretty much anywhere that takes credit cards. These cards offer many of the same benefits as store cards, though they tend to be more difficult to get if you have a less-than-good credit score.
