No, GEICO does not cover a rental car if your car breaks down unless you have rental reimbursement coverage. Rental reimbursement is an optional type of coverage that pays for a rental car while your vehicle is being repaired after a covered accident, and it lasts until your car is fixed or you reach your coverage limits.
Rental Reimbursement Coverage from GEICO
- Usually costs $10 per month or less
- Covers $30-$50 per day or $900-$1,500 per accident
- Ends after the limit is reached or your car is fixed
Once you reach the limit on GEICO’s coverage, you will have to pay for the rest of your rental out of pocket.
Keep in mind that rental reimbursement coverage will not cover additional insurance purchased through the rental car company or any security deposit required by the rental company. But if you have collision and comprehensive coverages, they should apply to the rental car you are temporarily driving. Your liability coverage will automatically apply while you are using a rental car as well.
