If the name on your credit report is wrong, you should file a dispute with the three major credit bureaus online, by phone or through the mail. If the incorrect name on your credit report causes someone else’s personal or account information to mix with yours, it is particularly important to correct the errors immediately.
What to Do if You Change Your Name
If you change your name, you do not need to file a dispute. You can inform your creditors of the name change, and they will report the new information to the credit bureaus. Your report will eventually reflect the update. Your previous name will remain on your credit report, too.
Some Name Variations Are Normal
Disputing the wrong name on your credit report is not always necessary. For example, it is normal for your credit report to list variations of your name, including your middle initial, middle name, your married or maiden name, a hyphen, or an abbreviated version of your name. However, completely random names should not be taken lightly.
You can check your credit report for errors, including mistakes with your name, for free here at WalletHub.
