Using the Platinum Card® to Buy Gift Cards
- Purchasing gift cards: You can use your Platinum Card® to buy gift cards, but some retailers may impose restrictions to prevent fraud. It’s always best to confirm the store's policy before making a purchase. American Express also offers its own branded gift cards that can be purchased online or in-store and used anywhere Amex is accepted in the U.S.
Keep in mind that you won’t earn rewards for American Express gift cards purchased online, but other gift card purchases may earn 1 point / $1 spent. - Redeeming Membership Rewards points for gift cards: The Platinum Card® points can be redeemed for gift cards from a wide variety of merchants, including retail stores, restaurants, and travel services. These redemptions offer a flexible way to use your rewards.
There are downsides to using a Platinum Card® to buy gift cards, though. For starters, gift card purchases don’t count toward the minimum spending requirement for the card’s initial bonus offer. Also, if you buy airline gift cards with the Platinum Card®, you cannot apply the card’s annual airline fee credit toward those purchases.
