It costs $7.50 to transfer 500 United miles (or 1.5 cents per mile), plus a $30.00 processing fee per transaction. So even if you’re just trying to top off someone’s MileagePlus account, you’re looking at $37.50 to make the transfer. You can transfer up to 100,000 miles per transaction, with a maximum of 100,000 miles per year to another MileagePlus account.
You must be a United MileagePlus member to earn, transfer and redeem United frequent flyer miles. You can enroll here for free. But if you have a United credit card, you’re automatically enrolled.
Cost to Transfer United Miles
- Transaction Fee: $30.00 per transfer.
- Mileage Fee: 1.5 cents per mile.
- Mile Value: Around 1.17 cents each. So, transferring miles costs more then they are worth.
- Miles Expiration: Miles do not expire.
Here’s a quick breakdown of what different transfer amounts would cost, so you can get a better idea of how the fees add up depending on how many miles you’re sending:
Miles Transferred | Transfer Fee | Transaction Fee | Total Cost |
500 | $7.50 | $30.00 | $37.50 |
5,000 | $75.00 | $30.00 | $105.00 |
10,000 | $150.00 | $30.00 | $180.00 |
20,000 | $300.00 | $30.00 | $330.00 |
30,000 | $450.00 | $30.00 | $480.00 |
To make a transfer, click the “Transfer miles to another member” option from the United transfer page, then enter the recipient’s name, MileagePlus number and email address. Finally, select the number of miles you’d like to transfer and click “Submit Transaction.” You will be prompted to pay the transfer fees with a credit card or debit card.
United miles can be redeemed for airfare, hotel rooms, car rentals and more. If you want to learn more, check out WalletHub’s in-depth review of United MileagePlus.
