This card has been scored using WalletHub’s proprietary credit card rating system. We evaluated this card for various cardholder needs and picked the rating for the need with the highest score, which is "Rebuild Damaged Credit." A score of 5 is the best a card can receive, and the rating for the card may vary on different pages where it is compared to other cards for different needs.

Chime looks great on the surface, but don't be deceived.
Yes, if you have direct deposit, some features are solid. SpotMe is useful, and the cashback additions are nice. However, none of that matters when your money is withheld over basic transactions.
The real issue is pre-authorizations, and it's significant.
I'm not the only one stating this. Visit Reddit or any forum, and you will encounter the same complaints. For example, you make a purchase—let's say $500 for groceries—but the final total is lower. The merchant settles the correct amount, yet Chime retains the remaining funds for up to two or three weeks.
This is completely unacceptable.
To be clear: merchants do not control pre-authorizations—banks do. Once a charge is finalized, there is no justification for holding onto the difference. The transaction should be considered closed.
Nevertheless, Chime continues to withhold the money.
What's worse, they continually shift the blame. They claim it's the store, the system, anything but their own responsibility. Meanwhile, you're left waiting without a way to dispute it, accelerate the process, or access your funds.
This is not a situation like a hotel or car rental where additional charges might arise later. These are groceries, retail purchases, everyday needs. There's no reason to apply the same treatment—and yet, Chime does.
At this point, it stops seeming like a mere oversight and starts feeling deliberate.
People depend on their money. When it's unnecessarily tied up for weeks, it can seriously disrupt someone's ability to purchase essentials, pay bills, or manage daily activities.
In conclusion, Chime is acceptable—until you need access to your funds. Then, it turns into an issue.
I recommend avoiding a Chime card for transactions involving pre-authorizations, unless you're prepared to wait weeks to reclaim your money.

CHIME is a tech company that handles financial services. Chime is not FDIC insured. It is not a bank, so your money IS at risk. My credit card was stolen in January, and I have sent proof that it was theft. Chime will not refund the stolen money, and it's only a $32 dispute.

Chime doesn't really have a bill payment service. They provide a list of companies you can pay using your Chime account. We could only pay our internet service provider using their payment feature. Additionally, Chime offered a signup bonus of $350. To qualify, you needed to open a checking account and have $200 in direct deposits within a 30-day period to receive the first $100. You earn another $100 the second month after another $200 in direct deposits, and the final $150 in the third month after $200 in direct deposits. Since we are paid biweekly and this is a secondary account, we made each direct deposit $150 for a total of $300 a month. We received the bonus the first month, but not the second or third. After reaching out to them, they told us that their system did not recognize any direct deposits under $200. If we wanted to deposit $300 a month into our account, one deposit had to be at least $200, with the other being $100, which we found absurd. So although we met the requirements, the computer system did not acknowledge it. Despite fulfilling our obligations, Chime customer service stated that they were unable to rectify the issue.

Atrocious customer service. You have to go through pressing buttons and then you get an AI virtual assistant, which can be frustrating if you're trying to reach a human representative. I couldn't believe they would program it that way. Then, when you do reach the human representatives, it's a call center in South America. They won't disclose the location, yet they have all your private information. How is that fair? There is terrible chatter noise in the background, and the representatives have thick accents that are difficult to understand. Furthermore, they struggle with English and common sense, and you still have to wait to speak with second-level inquiry representatives. It's not possible to speak with any supervisors. It's very concerning if you trust these companies and encounter problems with your account. I am done using their services. They fail to meet the standard required to conduct business properly. It is a total outrage. I feel our government and regulators are ignoring the situation and not caring about the citizens or the protection of laws. I am ashamed to be witness to this in my country and cannot support these practices. It is far from exceptional; it's a crooked and harrowing scam.
