American Express Serve is one of our favorite prepaid cards. It offers everything you need to say goodbye to your checking account or to check-cashing stores at a price point that’s hard to beat. Serve’s free online bill pay feature allows you to pay billers that don’t accept plastic, and its free mobile app enables you to fund your account simply by taking a picture of a check. There are only two fees to even worry about and both are avoidable. If you direct deposit at least $500 each month and withdraw money exclusively from MoneyPass ATMs, of which there are more than 24,000 nationwide, then Amex Serve will be completely free to use. As such, Serve makes for a great replacement checking account, check-cashing service or financial literacy teaching tool. And that’s all you really need to know. But if you want more information, make sure to check out our full American Express Serve review.
All the 1 star reviews are from people who obviously cannot read. They expect to use it like a debit card, which it clearly is not. Others complain about issues that they themselves are at fault for.

Terrible service when calling in for help. You cannot use the cards anywhere. You put money on, and then the representatives, who seem indifferent, exhibit rude attitudes, hang up on you, and then try to tell you that you've done everything wrong. This is the worst card to ever have. I don't know how this card still exists with the atrocious service they provide and how impossible they make it to access your money. It's absolutely the worst. I wouldn't recommend this card to anyone, given how much I despise it. Trump needs to deport them all.

I purchased a prepaid Bluebird Card years ago for added protection while shopping online and had no problems until this year. Now it is IMPOSSIBLE to speak with a customer service person using the 24-hour Customer Service number provided on the back of the card. Only fraudulent activity allowed me to speak to a human, and then without resolution. My card was compromised in 2023, and when the customer service agent transferred me to a supervisor, I waited on hold for 73 minutes. The customer service agent came back on the line (thank you) and advised me that the supervisor would not be answering my call because she was too busy. A week later, I received an email from a no-reply email address denying the fraud that happened to me! My only recourse was to write to a USPS mailing address for information; no email, no phone number was available. Eight weeks later and I'm still waiting for answers.

I had a card that didn't work, got declined everywhere. Called customer service and they reset it, said it would be good....it wasn't. Got denied everywhere again, called again and they got me with tech support that told me they couldn't fix it and I needed to try and add it to my Google pay wallet to get a new card number (since Google wallet changes the number) and see if that works....it didn't. Supervisors on my third day of customer support calling (and after an hour of wait) told me to just keep trying and hope that one day it works because they couldn't do anything more and had policies that stated they couldn't offer any refunds or replacements. So now I have a $25 piece of plastic that doesn't work, and support have admitted they can't do anything to help. The fact that they wouldn't offer to replace it if I just returned the (unused) card is insane to me, their policy is just "sucks to suck" if they can't fix it and for a brand as big as American Express it's crazy. Never buy a prepaid card, it's an extremely rare problem but if you win the lottery of bad luck they cannot and will not give you your money back, it's theirs now, and you get a nice piece of plastic to remind you of your struggles. With that all being said though, this is not the fault of the support team. They genuinely tried everything they could to help me and it's whoever made the policies that are to blame for this, as a non-working gift card should be company policy to replace as it is solely their fault for it

absolutely the worst company I will never ever do business with them. I have a prepaid gift card for $100 and I cannot use it online. I had to go through five calls in order to get that verified to me and then they tell me I can use it in the store what’s the difference from using it in the store online or in the store physically and what I want is not in a store it’s online so here I have $100 gift card that I can’t use where I want to there also was you also I was not warned that it could not be used online when I did purchase this hundred dollar gift card so I had no choice. They did not refund me my hundred dollars for the gift card and they told me pretty much that I have to use it in a physical store. I would assume that would be the same thing as online because they process it the same way. they also told me that it may work in the store. Which is not a responsible company either you know or you don’t nevertheless, I don’t get to use my gift card that I pay for online where I need to buy the supplies that I need to that I want this is a bad business. Always has been and I hope you all think twice before you purchase a gift card ort always has been and I hope you all think twice before you purchase a gift card or apply for their credit card. this is absolutely useless when you can’t use any of your credit cards from them or gift cards they said that the companies online are all being investigated till further notice but still they let me buy this card without warning me that it cannot be used online until I bought the card and called the company, then they told me absolutely ridiculous to me. This would be fraud.

No fees no complaints, easy to top up easy to use easy to check balance and transactions by phone unlike PayPal. By by PayPal thank you bluebird.
probably some of the worst customer service I've ever encountered, I had one question, can I add my prepaid card to a digital wallet. everytime I called, they either would direct me to another number that wasn't active, or put me on hold for about and hour "looking for the right representative". when I finally got on the phone with someone who had info on the prepaid cards, all there info was wrong. I was told that I couldn't add my gift card to gpay, which is weird since the card says you can add it too gpay, ad that I can only add my card to Samsung pay. than after trying to add it to Samsung pay and it not working, I recalled just to get a representative who said that the card does not work with digital wallets, which again makes no sense considering the fact that card states that it should work with gpay, Apple pay, and Samsung pay. 3 hours of my life I'm never gonna get back with literally no results and no help.

Lost my prepaid card and called to get a new one. It only had a few dollars left on it but I figured I'd try. It took me 3 phone calls and transfers to get to the correct department and then over 1/'2 an hour to give her my information. Her language was hard to understand but we muddles through it and then at the end she races through a URL that I had to send something to and I lost it. Couldn't understand one letter she was telling me. For the few dollars I was getting the process was too much and I told her she could keep her money.

This is a disgusting disgrace of a company. These people took $40 that was refunded to me through a purchase that was canceled by KFC. KFC refunded the money but American Express never put the $40 back on to my card. They then sent me an email saying that my account was overdrafted $7.. I didn't pay much attention to this email just assuming that the $40 would go back onto my card and the $7 would be refunded to American Express. It was December 13th 2021 I was checking my account to see if my child tax credit head came through yet. I had planned to use this to finish the rest of my shopping for Christmas for I have six children. Much to my surprise when I called it said my account had been canceled so I called to speak to somebody I spoke to two different ladies who told me that they check would be returned to the government and then mailed back to me. So basically I was screwed for Christmas and if I wanted to challenge this situation I would have to write a letter in ink and mail it to them. I can truly say I have never been so devastated or disgusted in my entire existence. I will never ever use Jackson Hewitt again for taxes as long as they are with American Express.
