What's Your Rating?
After not making any progress with the local branch, we have since contacted the 800 corporate offices, and we are still getting the runaround. Tony S (they don't give out last names to avoid accountability) said the late fees are being reviewed at the "highest department of escalation," but he continues to not have any answers after six weeks and counting. I get a weekly call from him telling me they are still reviewing the case. This is now Key Bank being evasive. I feel misled by corporate.
Side note: All the Key Bank locations here in Southern Oregon are sparse, with just a few employees at each branch. It's a ghost town when you walk in, completely understaffed. The Ashland location doesn't even have walk-up tellers.
Are they going out of business soon? I think so!
Last month, I found they started charging a $25.00/month maintenance fee. For what?
I mean, I never would have opened a bank account that charged me a fee for me to give them my money, but there it was.
I always used Key Bank because they seemed more like a friendly, hometown kind of bank, but this has really ruined that image for me.
I contacted customer service through messaging, but the representative just kept repeating that it was in the disclosures. Not helpful or showing any desire to keep my accounts.
I have always loved Huntington Bank, but there are no offices close to me. However, I am reconsidering making the trip now.
After my mother passed away, I followed Washington law to the letter. More than 40 days after her death, I presented KeyBank with a valid, notarized Affidavit of Successor under RCW 11.62, along with the death certificate and required identification, to close her account and cash an estate check.
Despite the law being clear, the branch refused to act. I was incorrectly told that I had to open an "estate account" to cash the check and that their legal department had to "review" the affidavit before they could close the account. Another employee even stated that "Washington state law does not dictate our policy," which was extremely concerning.
For clarity, the law states (RCW 11.62.020(1)) that 40 days after death, a financial institution shall release funds upon presentation of a compliant affidavit. The statute does not give banks additional time once the documents are presented.
Even more troubling:
RCW 11.62.020(2) and RCW 11.62.030 explicitly state that once the bank releases the funds in good faith, it is fully discharged from liability. In other words, the law protects the bank when it complies—yet KeyBank still refused.
This all occurred on the same day I picked up my mother's cremated remains, making an already devastating day far worse.
I escalated the matter to KeyBank's Executive Office, provided updated sworn statements, and explained the law again. Despite this, the process continues to be delayed, with no resolution offered and no clear explanation of KeyBank's actual policy for Washington State estates.
The statute exists specifically to avoid probate and unnecessary delays, yet that is exactly what KeyBank has caused.
If you are dealing with an estate, especially in Washington, be prepared to advocate strongly for yourself and know the law before walking into a KeyBank branch.
Five weeks ago, I stopped receiving any notifications for charges made. It still sends me a notification when a payment is posted, which is from the same number the charge notifications come from, so it’s not a problem with my phone. I have spent hours on the phone with customer support, and frankly, they are often rude and they simply don't grasp what I am reporting as an issue. I have gone through their troubleshooting routine so many times I think I could recite it verbatim. Each day someone says they will call back the next day, but not a single call has come from them. I finally locked the card and changed all of my automatic payments to another bank. I'm traveling for work and nowhere near a branch, but as soon as I can walk into a branch, I will be closing all of my accounts.
Am I the only one this is happening to? If not, please let me know how you were able to fix the issue. Yes, I have updated my phone and the app. I have turned notifications off and then on again. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the app after restarting my phone. It is in print that the notifications aren't coming; I can see the discrepancy between the charges I have made and the notifications they show they have sent out. Why can’t they see that discrepancy? At this point, there is no way I would keep my KeyBank accounts; they have wasted too much of my time and been a source of too much frustration. But surely I am not the only person having this issue, even though they would like me to believe that.
