You can receive a direct deposit without having a payroll by using transfers from government benefits such as Social Security or tax refunds, pension or retirement distributions, and other recurring payments.
If your goal is to qualify for bank bonuses that require “qualifying direct deposits,” keep in mind that regular person‑to‑person transfers such as Zelle, Venmo to bank, or simple ACH pushes usually do not count as direct deposits.
