To use your American Express credit card with Apple Pay, open the Wallet app on a compatible Apple device and follow the steps to add an eligible Amex card. Once your card has been verified, you’ll be able to use the card through Apple Pay with any merchant who accepts contactless payments and Amex. You can also add your card using the Amex mobile app.
How to Use Your Amex Card with Apple Pay at a Physical Merchant
- Hold up your device to the reader.
- Use Touch ID, Face ID, or your passcode to authenticate the payment.
- Wait for your payment to be authorized.
For in-store payments, an iPhone 6 or any later version of the iPhone qualifies as a compatible Apple device, along with any Apple Watch.
How to Use Your Amex Card With Apple Pay Online
If you want to use your Amex credit card with Apple Pay for online shopping, you can also set it up on certain Mac and iPad devices. For these devices, you’ll still need to follow the instructions on the Wallet app, which can be found on the “System Preferences” menu on your Mac. Once Apple Pay is set up, you’ll be able to click the Apple Pay option at check-out with eligible retailers and follow the instructions to make a payment.
Many credit cards and charge cards issued by Amex – including any American Express consumer or small business cards – can be linked to Apple Pay. Most American Express corporate cards are also eligible, as are certain Amex prepaid cards.
