What happens if you don’t pay Amex in full every month depends on the type of card you have. With a traditional Amex credit card, like the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express, if you don’t pay your balance in full, you’ll lose your grace period and be charged interest on the remaining amount at the card’s APR until it’s paid off.
With Amex hybrid cards, like the American Express Platinum Card®, the outcome depends on the type of balance:
- Pay Over Time balance: This is a built-in feature on select Amex cards that lets you carry an interest-accruing balance over time, up to a limit. Not every transaction is eligible for the Pay Over Time balance. If you don’t pay it in full, you’ll be charged interest at the card’s APR on the remaining amount.
- Pay In Full balance: This part must be paid in full each month. If you don’t, Amex can charge late fees, suspend your charging privileges, or even close your account - at their discretion (see Rates & Fees).
You can always review your card’s terms and conditions to learn more about how it works, or call the Amex customer service at (800) 528-4800 if you’re unsure about which balances apply to your account.
