Citi switched from Visa to Mastercard “as part of a larger effort to offer a more consistent experience,” according to the Citi website. The switch, which began in late 2020, applied to both new and existing cardholders with certain Citi credit cards.
Most consumer Citicards, including the Citi Double Cash Card, are now on the Mastercard network. On the other hand, co-branded Citi credit cards like the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi and the Best Buy® Credit Card are still Visa cards.
Other factors such as processing fees or network-level benefits, also may have prompted Citi’s decision to switch its credit cards from Visa to Mastercard. But overall, there’s little difference between the two, both of which are among the world’s largest credit card networks. Both Visa and Mastercard credit cards can be used pretty much anywhere, and both offer similar secondary credit card benefits such as $0 fraud liability protection and rental car insurance.
